Signal now fixed?

I'm at -96 in my office and have two bars and perfect call quality.

What's the problem? Do we want clear calls or better numbers? I'll take the calls every time.

yes the good call quality is great. i am always sitting between -80 and -110 and i always get good quality sound.

my issue with getting higher numbers is that i know i could be getting better battery life if i had better signal quality.
unfortunately i also know that the reported signal doesnt matter. it just matters how much power your phone puts into the radio.

I'm a little bummed with the reception of this phone. I'm not paying attention to the bars, but am regularly getting -100s at various places around my metro area and couldn't get 3g consistently sitting in a restaurant tonight -- and my area is blood red on VZ map. Not out in the boonies here. I'm sitting in this restaurant trying to read an article on the net, and I had to hold the phone upside down and point it to the window to get the page to load. I dunno, this phone seems to have odd behavior regarding signal strength. Plus my call quality has not been great regardless of signal strength and has low, muffled sound quality at the earpiece. However, I believe the latter problem is because my phone is defective because most users report good call quality. I plan on exchanging it before my 30 days expires and give the Inc one more shot.

I just made an app in the market called "Real Signal" (or search for kenyu73). The HTC signal bars are incorrect. I think they buffer the signals and display the average with in some screwed threshold. It doesn't even display full bars while next to my Verizon Extender.

My app takes the raw Android signal and sets it into the notification bar. It displayed full bars next to my Extender while the HTC displayed 0 (was in my basement). However, what is weird.. once you make a call the HTC signal goes to full..<shrug>

I'm using your app right now, I like it! Thanks for the awesome app. I gave you some clicks. ;)

I set my bars to Blackberry standards and now I never show zero bars. I know it doesn't mean anything but it makes me feel better knowing the real signal.

Although, I did notice that my bars constantly jump from 3 bars to zero when Im at my job. At home, my bars never jump. What does that mean and do you think its a hardware problem?

Oh and my signal has been the same since I got the phone at launch. I don't think any improvements have been made as of yet.

Thanks for the feedback!

I'm by no means a signal expert, but it's probably interference in your office building. It would be interesting to see if it doesn't it on a call... there's a Verizon test number you can call, but I forgot what it is.

I added an EVDO signal bar too... hopefully that helps too!

@kenyu73 I was seeing this behavior also while I was testing out an extender (which got me concerned that the seemingly low signal was not going to help my battery life). I ultimately returned the network extended because I had problems with dropping calls as I'd move out of my extender's coverage. I really wish the extender had worked better for me. Could be my house layout or the layers of lead paint on our walls.

Thanks for making the app. I'll check it out.

The bars going up when making a call are normal. When not using the 'phone' the signal bars are showing the 3G variety (data). When making a call, the bars it shows are of the 1X variety (calls/sms). From my experience 1X always seemed stronger here.

I installed that signal meter app. For the most part it will show stronger signal then the HTC display. However, I am wondering if there isn't also a problem with the tower or the phone itself. I've noticed on certain days, my signal will show quite strong. Other days...like today for example...its very weak. Could it be the weather....rain then sun (Seattle, WA). Maybe the tower is messed up somehow that lets the weather affect it but, then it does also appear that there is something wrong the phone itself. Its hard to pinpoint.
