Help Notification Sounds stop working -- Note 5, Note 8

I have a Note 8 which has the same problem I had on my Note 5 (possibly also on the Note 7, though I can't recall) and also had started on the Note 2 (which I had until I got the Note 7). The notification sounds stop working.

Example: I turn the phone to "vibrate only" while I am at work. Before I leave the office in the evening, I turn the sounds back on. The notification sounds do not reactivate and I don't know that I've received a text message until I look at the phone to see the blinking light and the icon.

The volume is correct. There are no other settings I can identify that might be affecting this. Sometimes rebooting the phone reinitializes the notification sounds, but not always.

The only thing that usually fixes the problem is going into the settings and re-selecting the same notification sound that I am using.

I have one friend to whose contact I have assigned a separate notification sound. This sound won't work even after I reassign the default sound. I have to edit her contact and reassign her sound.

I have tried using the standard default notification sound, but this does not fix the problem. I have also tried restoring the phone's basic settings. This has no effect. I am unwilling to do a factory reset since I have had this same problem on multiple phones and I'm sure that once I change my notification tones, the problem will come back. In fact, it might come back whether I change the sounds or not.

Please note that in both cases, all I am doing is clicking to reselect the notification tone that is already selected.

My carrier is Verizon. My phone is not rooted. I am using the basic Messages SMS app (not even Messages+).

Help? Thanks in advance.

i have a note 8. i have the phone in DND and vibrate only often. I even ask bixby to change those for me.

i also have custom installed sounds (.wavs)

t mobile variant. stock non rooted.

i don't have those issues ands we both have the same device. what can be different?

well did you install from a backup? meaning when you got the note 8, did you sdoi a restore from an old backup from another phone (note 7 perhaps?).

if you did, is possible you may have loaded up something that is causing your glitches to occur.

could also be a rogue app you have installed.

are you saying even if you use STOCK on-board sounds as the notification tones those ALSO don't re-activate after you turn the phone off silent?

I know what you're sayin'... "marc get to the point!!!"

ok ok ok....

what im saying is it could be any number of things! your issue is not something i have heard of before on this device in particular.

you will need to do some work on your end.. meaning factory reset and do a manual restore , then adding apps back a couple at a time.

yes i know you are not happy to hear that.

it does NOT sound like a hardware issue, so it has to be software related, most likely user induced...

temp solutions to try:

use different ringtones
use different messenger app (I use textra)

get a tmobile variant.. ;)

Hi Marc,

  1. Well, I have Verizon and you have t mobile, so you have a different system image. Verizon is renowned for crapping up Android. In a previous version, they managed to disable the functionality that allows you take a picture and then draw on it. (Really annoying.)
  2. I didn't install from a backup, I used Smart Switch. And while it is possible that I have a rogue app, I am a paranoid IT professional who doesn't trust Google, so I'm pretty careful about keeping the phone clean.
  3. Yes, I have the same problem with STOCK sounds.
  4. I have tried different notification tones. It doesn't matter what the tone is. I have a different tone for the one friend because she has a habit of sending long texts, which the system splits into multiple texts that come in very quickly one after another, and my notification tone starts and restarts and restarts and then I yell at the phone. So I set her up with a simple plink-plink tone.
  5. I can try a different messaging app. I loathe Message+. I stuck with plain Messages because all I want to do with a messaging app is, well, send messages. And once in a while, a photo.
  6. I forgot to mention that I have Android Wear and an Asus Zenwatch, which could potentially be interfering in some way.
  7. It could be user-induced, but I much prefer to blame Verizon. ;-)
  8. I'll think about T-mobile. Seriously. I used to be a consultant and travelled a lot, then I had to make occasional long hauls (long story, never mind), so I had to stick with AT&T or Verizon. But things have changed. So T Mobile might be an option now.

Most of my post was tongue in cheek.. :)

1. Yes different images but at the core ther OS is the same, and as many of us know on this (and other) forums, Verizon did cripple these phones (they even took off the “auto restart” feature !?). Still though, you should not have any issue with ringtones/notifications..

2. Smart switch is still a kind of “backup/transfer” no? Its moving over files from two different devices from what I understand (ive never used smart switch), so still possible to move over some tangled databases, etc...

3. So you can rule out custom sounds as the issue

4. Maybe have her invest in an sms app (textra) that will send the texts as an mms file (i.e. one long message instead of broken up ones)

5. Textra for the win chuck!

6. I use a Moto 360 android watch with the note 8 with no issues. They both talk /connect with no issues.

7. Me thinks its something smart switch moved over... and well, sure lets just throw verizon under the bus too because, why not.. :)

8. I was teasing about the tmobile quip. Verizon and att still rule in terms of coverage in more areas. If you need more coverage in more REMOTE places, you’re better off at big red or the Death Star,, :)

Bonus: still think you should factory reset sans smart switch. I’d wager you’d have a better experience.

I have to agree with Marc. Yes, Verizon boogers with the OS, but typically only with features, the core functionality is normally still intact. I have a Verizon Note 8 with a Samsung Gear S3 dangling from the side and I haven't experienced any of the issues that you have mentioned. I lurk a lot in a few Note 8 forums and this is a problem that I have only heard of one time, from you ;). If this were a frequent issue, there would be threads all over the forums looking for a solution or threatening a class action lawsuit against Verizon because they missed their text from Great Aunt Martha and this has just devastated them. I am an engineer and supposedly IT functions are someone else's task, but that is frequently not the case, so I do IT work quite a bit. I have troubleshot (is that a word) many phone issues, in fact it is normal for someone at church or at work to hit me up with a phone question about every week. I am definitely not a noob. I would say that 99% of the issues that I have diagnosed for folks was related to that "special little app" that they just love and cannot do without that is behaving badly. Also, I have found that once identified that "special little app", once uninstalled and then reinstalled, usually plays well with others. I have also straightened out messes made by software that supposedly seamlessly switches you from your old device to your new one. You mentioned that you are weary of google apps and are careful to keep your phone clean, well in my opinion using an app to transfer your "stuff" from one device to another is very messy.

I would concur with Marc in that starting with a clean slate would be the best start to diagnose your issue. Not a solution that folks typically like to hear, but unless you actual device is bad, it usually takes care of this type of issue.

Good Luck,
BigRedGonzo

Hi BRG,

Thanks for the response. When I said I don't trust Google, I meant the company. However, I use no Google apps directly (although I do use the Play Store). Smart Switch is a Samsung app.

The problem did not appear on my Note 2 until I installed Android Wear, which is one reason I am bit suspicious that there might be a connection there.

you are free to un-pair the watch and test.

as mentioned, I have an android wear watch and i've not experienced any issues.

really the only things worth doing is un-pairing the watch and/or resetting the device.

i understand about smart switch. my main concern here is you simply "transferred" files over from an older firmware with older hardware. its possible an app you installed is running an old database and tangling up things under the hood. its a pure rabbit hole.

restarting from fresh is really the best way.
