Just received my first OTA update.

I'm in the UK.

I bought the phone from a Samsung experience store SIM free.

I'm on ThreeUK for my network.

It will be a month until WE in the USA sees it. We are locked there.
Is that a carrier lock?

What about devices bought direct from Sammy?

To be fair, when I look at the US phone networks i wonder how any progress can be made.

It seems one thing Apple got right was refusing to give different devices to different carriers. (Or so I've heard)

I would have thought Samsung is big enough to throw it's weight about too...

The difference is Steve Jobs: he wanted to control the experience and for it to be an Apple experience, and was willing to play hardball to get it. Remember too that his initial model was find one carrier in each country: then once it was a success the others had to accept his terms of they wanted to play.

Samsung are the opposite extreme. They want their devices everywhere and are willing to play the carriers' game to do that. Yes, they also spent big on marketing: they quite deliberately set out to own the market and to use the resources of the company to get to that point, but they were not going to restrict their sales to achieve control over the experience. If a carrier wants to load up junk apps, they can do so - Samsung were happy to install the bloat on their unlocked devices too if you paid them enough.

Just a different model. Samsung won't take control that way because they don't care.
