I see lots of comments about wireless tethering and maybe I'm missing something but if you have WLAN access and your laptop has a wireless modem, what's the point in tethering?

Im a moron and have no idea how to root my phone. I have some computer knowledge. Quick tips on how to do this?
Sure, I just wish somebody would come up with software that would back up all of your apps and settings, and then reinstall them after the upgrade is complete.
Do people who don't root also lose everything when they upgrade the OS?
i can't for the life of me get the computer to recognize the phone. i got the phone to flash the rooted file. But flashing a custom rom is much harder than flashing the root. I know how to get the phone into recovery mode, but when i connect the phone to the computer, I can't run the adb to get the phone pass the Exclamation Screen in recovery mode. HELP!
Does anyone know if there is a way to root without having to start from scratch with the ROM? Just got all the apps installed and settings set to my preference and don't feel like doing that again. Coming from the Hero I remember rooting on it didn't wipe my device so I'm hoping to find something similar for my EVO.
If i have done the update can i still do this to root?
OK, I'm stuck. I've flashed PC36IMG.ZIP, put the phone in Recovery, and run the recovery file from the "evo-recovery" folder. It says it's pushing files to phone, then nothing happens. Any suggestions?
Is there an intermediate step I'm missing? I notice this step is listed:
"- Extract the evorecovery.zip to your desktop
- plug your phone into a usb port on your desktop
- In a shell:
Code:
adb reboot recovery"
But I assume that was simply to get your phone into recovery mode, which I did manually.
I go into recovery, load the recovery file from evo-recovery, it says it's pushing files, then when I go to the menu, it says "E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command" and it gives me the regular recovery menu, not toast's. I don't know what I'm doing wrong.
OK, I might be thick here, how do I get it to do the adb reboot recovery? I opened up the terminal on my computer and entered the command, got a "adb is not a recognized command filetype" or some such error.
cd \android-sdk-windows\tools\
adb reboot recovery
