i can't for the life of me get the computer to recognize the phone. i got the phone to flash the rooted file. But flashing a custom rom is much harder than flashing the root. I know how to get the phone into recovery mode, but when i connect the phone to the computer, I can't run the adb to get the phone pass the Exclamation Screen in recovery mode. HELP!

Assuming you've flashed toast's PC36IMG.ZIP, then when you put your Evo in recovery make sure you run toast's custom recovery.

While in recovery: connect Evo to computer, run the appropriate evo-recovery script on your computer. It should push a bunch of stuff to the phone, and you'll see the custom recovery. Then on the custom recovery you can select the option to flash a custom ROM.

Make sure you have HTC Sync installed. That provides the drivers for the Evo.

Does anyone know if there is a way to root without having to start from scratch with the ROM? Just got all the apps installed and settings set to my preference and don't feel like doing that again. Coming from the Hero I remember rooting on it didn't wipe my device so I'm hoping to find something similar for my EVO.

OK, I'm stuck. I've flashed PC36IMG.ZIP, put the phone in Recovery, and run the recovery file from the "evo-recovery" folder. It says it's pushing files to phone, then nothing happens. Any suggestions?

Is there an intermediate step I'm missing? I notice this step is listed:

"- Extract the evorecovery.zip to your desktop
- plug your phone into a usb port on your desktop
- In a shell:

Code:
adb reboot recovery"

But I assume that was simply to get your phone into recovery mode, which I did manually.

I go into recovery, load the recovery file from evo-recovery, it says it's pushing files, then when I go to the menu, it says "E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command" and it gives me the regular recovery menu, not toast's. I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

I don't believe so right now. You can try some backup solutions, but most of them don't work on Evo yet in my experience. Try AppBrain.

If i have done the update can i still do this to root?

Yup. A lot of people reporting success.

Try using adb reboot recovery to go into recovery as opposed to getting their manually thru vol_down+power

Also make sure you are running the evo-recovery BAT file as administrator.

OK, I might be thick here, how do I get it to do the adb reboot recovery? I opened up the terminal on my computer and entered the command, got a "adb is not a recognized command filetype" or some such error.

Have you ever used ADB before?

Download the Android SDK, extract the contents of the zip somewhere, and look for the tools folder. Let's assume the tools folder is in C:\android-sdk-windows\tools\ and that your Evo is connected thru USB and with Debugging Enabled

Then in a command prompt, do this
Code:
cd \android-sdk-windows\tools\
adb reboot recovery

For those having trouble flashing to a custom rom after rooting

-First, I needed to install HTC Sync (can be found on HTC's website in the download section for the Evo).
-Install then restart the computer.
-Boot into recovery mode
-Make sure the Evo-Recover folder downloaded is put into the C:\ root folder of your computer.
-Plug in the phone.
-You should hear a sound that usb connected or something similar.
-Launch the bat file using administrator.
