best uk network for htc desire?

You may have HSDPA (which all the networks now offer) but 240kb/sec is very slow for HSDPA. I have measured 2000 kb/sec on my T-Mobile connection and others report as much as 3000 or more.

And I understand that if you are out of range of a 3 mast, while 3 has roaming agreements with other UK networks, for data that drops to 2G (vy slow) - and 3's network out of towns and cities is relatively sparse.

Ian

Oops, slight typo, should have been 2400, although it can vary and has been as little as 1000kb per sec. Just had a look at my speedtest results over the last 10 days and the best I have had was 2560 and the worst was 870.

you are right as to being out of range of a 3 mast where it drops to Orange, but since 3, Orange and Tmob are sharing masts (i think) then its a win win situation far all customers.

In the North East where I travel around regularly I always get a good signal, once in SW Scotland whilst playing golf I was the only one that had a working mobile out of 6 people :D

If you want VFM, I would take a look at getting your deal via Quidco - there are some very good cashback deals for pay monthly contracts! I got my Desire from mobiles.co.uk via Quidco and got a nice cash bonus as a result. Went with a Voda contract as it is the only carrier with a decent signal at my home - though I am less than impressed with their 500MB FUP (though they tell me that they will not enforce it too rigorously!).

My Desire on Orange gets a strong signal in most places other than my house and garden ironically! Think I'm in a deadspot :D The 3G/HSDPA speeds seem really fast too, little to no loading time for youtube videos when on H.

If you get a Desire from mobiles.co.uk they sell them sim-free and unbranded (on Orange at least - not sure about other networks!) :) You get the contract along with it, but at least you have the freedom of having an unlocked, unbranded phone.

If you're a data whore, then T-mobile has the best FUP.

There's free WiFi almost everywhere now anyway. On trains, in pubs, clubs, cafes, mcdonalds, amusements, courts, etc etc.

Most bandits (gambling machine) have wireless routers built into them these days.

+ Boris Johnson said he wants to put a wireless router inside every bus stop in London and turn London into one massive WiFi hotspot in time for the 2012 olympics. :D

I chose O2 as they seemed to offer the best compromise between good data policy ("unlimited", subject to FUP, but apparently this is going away anyway to be replaced by tiered limits), good call coverage in my area (was previously on Vodafone and had zero signal all the time) and minimal branding.

Have to admit, though, I struggle to get 3G anywhere (at home, although I don't care because of WiFi, or in the city - I'm just outside Cov). I did once get a "H" symbol, which I assumed was HSDPA or whatever the acronym is, but I couldn't browse any pages, the progress bar just locked up. Usually "G" is the best I get.

I almost wish I'd gone with Orange - my GF's iPhone is on Orange and always gets 3G without issue, but I heard a lot of horror stories about branding, and their data offering was ridiculously small.

It's all good so long as I can find WiFi, going to visit my parents' later in the middle of nowhere and with no WiFi so I'll see how that goes...

Or Topcashback, which is what I used for my Desire from mobiles.co.uk :)

im on vodafone and had one of the very first handsets they shipped, no branding wat so ever, even the box was just an ordinary htc stock one.

coverage not too bad, but had a shock coming from o2 where mms txts were free, found out vodafone charge but i bet there all goin that way now data is at a premium.

one big downer which im not happy about at all on vodafones network is how they seem to be blocking all the live tv streaming sites, both YAMGO and TVCATCHUP are both being blocked by the network mainly because they want you to be paying them for there streaming telly services.

well its not on considering ive got a measly 500mb download limit a month, i should be able to use it anyway i see fit!!!

gonna start kicking up a fuss about this streaming blocking business i suggest all fellow vodafone customers do the same, keep posting on the vodafone censored 'open' forums and email thier support, power to the people is wat i say.

I bought an Orange hero. Whether you seebitbas branding or not, Orange hero had a custom Rom on it. It had a known bug where valid unlock codes wouldn't work. I had to root and put a custom rom on it to unlock.

Infact if you look on the HTC site, there are specific updates for the orange HTC hero.

HTC Hero - Software Download

I think someone thinks I'm thick.....

bedfordshire
I work in most areas of Bedfordshire, and hardly have ay issue on Tmobile for work or personal phones.

Look closely at the networks coverage maps and ask friends etc in the locations you use your phone.

If you're changing networks, make sure your 100% happy before porting your number as cancelling whilst a port is going through could lose you your number! Happened to a few people I know, and apparently is covered under networks porting terms.
