Android 3G/UMTS switching 3/Orange

Hi all,

I'm used to my Nokia N97 where I can manually set whether to connect to the GSM or UMTS network and was wondering whether this is possible on Android phones? (I'm hopefully getting a Desire soon).

Also, as I'm on 3, what is the 'automatic' network switching like? i.e. if I go out of range of the 3 network it'll automatically switch to the Orange GSM network (3 get charged to use the Orange network obviously). This is all very well but it can sometimes take 50 seconds before my phone switching from a no-3G zone onto the Orange network...

Any help would be much appreciated!
