Eh, let's just report him en masse and hope for thread lock. The dude's always trolled the forums prattling about the doom of Android, how the iPhone is amazing and superior, how the Nexus One sucks, etc etc. If you see his username, you can pretty much assume that whatever that follows it will be worthless drivel.

"predictable" is not a contribution to this discussion. i got the mt3g the day it was released, before the droid existed so dont give me that little girl android phone nonsense. at the time mt3g came out, it was the stock in trade.....again, you have not contributed anything valuable to this thread.

Well Confuse-ious I waited for the the Droid, my uncle just bought a stock mt3g with 1.6 a few weeks ago, is not a "tech whiz" and loves it.

With regards to "predictable" look up the difference between 64 bit and 32 bit operating systems, (ubuntu, xp, etc) and maybe you will understand where there are so many versions of android, it is not my fault you are uneducated about this point.

You might want to use the factory phone and sms/mms if you are having trouble with aftermarket, particularly since you are not a self-reported "tech whiz".

Are you a linux user?

Mod's please lock this thread down, this guy is just looking to rattle cages and press buttons...

like communism, open source/free OS sounds great on paper, but lousy in real life.

so people thought because android is free, users would get the updated versions of the OS as soon as they came out, that the update would be full as opposed to partials, and free of charge. but nothing is further from the truth.

the mt3g is stuck with android 1.6, and so are a bunch of other android phones.
the droid is getting the 2.1 update but it wont be the full version of 2.1; from what i understand, it will be missing something.
newest android version is never free of charge because you actually need to buy a new phone to get it. so if you want android 2.1 and you have a mt3g, tuff luck cus u need to spend money and buy the N1. bogus!!
the multiple versions in multiple phones with different hardware limitations with multiple versions of one version has resulted in android's "fragmentation", which also messes up the android market, limiting availability of certain apps to certain phones. another reason y open source sux....

doesnt anybody see this? r people in denial?
Open source has nothing to do with that incoherent, rambling, barely lucid rant. It's probably a more accurate criticism of Communism than it is of Open Source, so little of it makes sense.

The MT3G is currently stuck with Android 1.6, that doesn't mean it will always be stuck there. If the hardware can handle it, it will get it. If it doesn't, it is still a powerful smart-phone, with an excellent OS on it.

"From what I understand, it will be missing something" - what something, fairy dust?

"messes up the android market" - How? Some apps need a minimum version of the OS to run, same as every OS in history. Some devices don't have the hardware requirements, not much point showing them the apps if they can't run them. Again, absolutely nothing to do with Open Source.

Android is rapidly approaching the iPhone's levels of functionality and usability for the average user, and has already exceeded it in some ways. Here's the difference though: if "the geek and the risk-taker" want to take advantage of Android's openness and adaptability, they can. They can't do the same with an iPhone, because it's so locked-down.

And I'm delighted with the fact that Android is available across such a wide range of devices. It means I can choose what's best for me. Good luck finding an iPhone with a hardware keyboard. Or a smaller/bigger screen. Or a lower spec in order to save money. Or a replaceable battery

If you've ever looked through the Blackberry apps, you'll see why open source on Android is better. It means some kid on a Friday evening with a case of Red Bull can throw a GPS based restaurant finder together and throw it up in the app market for free. The same app on Blackberry takes a team of developers who need to be paid.

Feel free to get yourself a Curve!

lets be honest here, many apps look and perform like they were made that way

This is funny stuff. Android will continue to do alright. Open Source is a very viable platform. Google couldn't kill the android os at this point if they wanted too. It's out there, anybody can grab it and modify it. They may be able to kill the market but just do a google search for apk files. The market is not the only place to get them so you could easily do installs from your sd card with files you downloaded. When you say Android is doomed, that's like saying linux is doomed. Linux is so widespread now that you couldn't kill it now. Android is the same exact way. Anyone can go grab the source code and mess with it. Then you can unload your own custom rom into the world. And since you know what is wrong with the OS. Here's the source code Get source (Android Open Source Project) Fix it for us please, because we like our phones.

Personally I think android just stomps anything apple will be able to throw at it, due to lock down that apple has on the iphone os. Though most people I would not recommend android too. It took me a month and half to get my phone the way I wanted it and polished feeling. Most people want a phone that feels polished out of the box. They don't care about personalization of the phone. They really don't care about the hardware of their phone. Most people want something that is pretty, simple, shiny. If you take your time and get to know the droid and be willing to go through a couple factory resets and experiment with a mix of apps. Your phone will fit you and your lifestyle better than the iphone could ever do. Though if you don't care for getting your phone set to your life and want something that will just vaguely fit everybody, then go with the iphone.

Fragmentation is an issue with the cell phone industry in general not android and/or open source. Take for example my previous phone running Windows mobile 6.0. It will never get 6.5 or 7 and when I try to go find and download various apps half of them crash and the other half tell em they won't work once I've installed them, then some are designed for standard and some for pro and some work with each. There are many many apps that WM6.1 standard can't run that pro or 6.5 can. Thats fragmentation.
We got a free game n a kids meal the other day and it wouldn't install on the old windows 2000 box in the basement for my kids, thats fragmentation. I couldn't install 64 bit MSSQL server on a 32bit windows 2003 server, thats fragmentation. It happens in other industries as well.

sorry no time to spell check. btw, it's very unimaginative to call people out on their grammar in forums like these.

Lol? I can guarantee you, sir, aside from little shortenings (I.E. 'lol' 'ROM' and likewise), everyone that is a part of this forum that's got 'push' ( people like Numus, or other now famous people here) make sure to have a clean slate on each post. By tis, I'm speaking of punctuation, capitalization, and they try to make it flow and be easy to read. Granted I'm doing this from my phone, so there are probably a FEW mistakes. Granted, I'm still taking thr time to make sure it's at least 90% correct. It's just proper to do so; If a business that I want to work for has a website and newspaper ad that is riddled with typographical and grammar errors, I, along with most sensible others, will look at something like this with a cocked head and a slight frown. It's just a level of proffesionalism that should be present. Present yourself as you would like to be seen. Typos and choppy sentences make me think either 8 year old, or senior citizen who got a hold of a netbook.

That's my opinion, and to hold true to my word, I'll re read this after it is posted, and bold each error that I made, if any.

This is how I feel about Android too. I love it and hope that all my future phones have it, or something similar. But they honestly are not the most user friendly phones. My mother in law is thinking of getting one and I'm trying to stop her. She's an airhead and I don't feel like answering the countless questions I know she'll have.

That is, if you want to customize some things deeper than what's in the user manual, but don't want to download the SDK or root your phone to get that done, I agree, Android today isn't simplest. However,
1. it is a moderately narrow middle ground. That is, MOST folks, who will never join a forum, will take what they get, and won't even go find the stuff in the market that they'd like when someone like one of us tells them there's an app to read barcodes in the store, for example. they'll just use it in whatever state the provider offers it. On the other end is folks like many here, who are either technically oriented or risk takers or both, who will do whatever it takes to get the most out of the phone, either from need or because they simply enjoy figuring it all out.
2. The delivery model will improve so the product can better serve this middle ground of user - there's enough numbers for money to be made, and with a wide open model, somebody will decide they want to provide that solution and make that money - we're not there today.

But I understand the frustration some have. You hear about all this stuff that CAN be done, but then realize a given smartphone either won't do it, or must be rooted or major self-education is involved to get it there; often, folks don't want to make a 2nd career out of their smartphone.

i understand ur point. i guess at the end of the day, android rewards the geek and the risk-taker who roots and hence is not for everyone. this is why i think it's going no where. the geeks will always prefer android no matter what. the rest of the crowd will buy android phones only because of a lack of better options; the average verizon, t-mobile, and sprint customer is buying the android phone for its hardware and for the absence of good palm hardware and absence of the iphone. the minute a true average consumer device such as iphone or a good plam device shows up on the shelf, android looses its appeal. it is google's saving grace that palm cannot produce good hardware. by the same token, it is google's saving grace that iphone is only on at and t.

The real reason why phone manufacturers are bringing out new phones with Android 1.5 or 1.6 out is that Android 2.1 has been shown to be alot more unstable than the old version.

It's the same as when PC manufacturers were giving people the option of having Windows XP pre-installed instead of Windows Vista. Everybody knew that Vista was a hoggy, crashy-prone OS. The same is true of Android 2.1.

I'm an open source developer and I take issue at being called a communist. Socialist perhaps...
I also take issue at the suggeestion that open source software is somehow inherently bad or poor quality... I write great code, thanks very much.

Its actuallu quite ironic that the op refered to open source as communist. if any thing its the apple ecosystem that's communist, you know, being locked in and closed and all that. No upgrades etc. As where with android, and other platforms, your free to do what you like with your phonr, no restrictions.

Perhaps he should go to dictionary.com and look up the definition of communist.

You do realise that the only phone with an official 2.1 release is the Nexus One? And that there have been virtually no complaints about the software of it? And that virtually everyone agrees that 2.1 is a lot more mature than 1.5/1.6? And that there were howls of derision when Sony announced the X10 was coming with 1.6 instead of 2.1? And that every time HTC and Samsung push back the release dates for the 2.1 update, more and more users cry out in frustration? And that the "real reason" manufacturers are bringing out new phones with 1.5 and 1.6 is that they don't have the time or the inclination to rewrite all their drivers for it?

You just pulled your whole argument out of your ass, didn't you?

Really? How so? Care to link some proof of this instability? If you're stuck with 1.5/1.6 and are simply jealous, you could just say so, you know.

FYI, the Droid on a 2.1 custom ROM is much faster and performs better than the stock 2.01.

Can you prove this or cite examples? First time I've heard this.
