After you ran gingerbreak did you check the app drawer on the phone? I rooted my friends Atrix with it using Windows 7 and I thought that same thing as you but even though I didn't see anything happen on Windows the app was added to the phone. Check your phone it probably has gingerbreak installed.

Did you install the gingerbreak.apk onto your phone? You have two options

1. Use the side load wonder machine to install the apk to your phone, then run the gingerbreak application on your phone.

Or

2. If you have not installed the apk file on your phone, use the gingerbreak.exe file that is listed on the bottom of the 1st post here: [HOWTO] Easy Root 1.5.7 & 1.83 using GingerBreak - xda-developers

Download the exe file to your computer, turn on USB debugging on your phone, plus in the USB cable and then run the gingerbreak.exe on your PC. It will install the apk file to your phone. Then run gingerbreak from your phone to root it.

If the exe does not work, you need to either install it manually with adb, use the sideload wonder machine or a different computer that that will allow the gingerbreak.exe file to run.

Hi,

Thanks for the instructions. I was able to root my phone successfully. However, i have dozens upon dozens of application subfolders in the sdcard folder with data in them (game emulator roms, downloaded mp3s, etc). All those sub folders appear now gone. Are they just hidden or does rooting sort of flash your sdcard storage? All my installed apps are working fine, but they also lost their downloaded data. However, it available storage is 11GB and it seems to me that was the same before rooting which makes me wonder if the files and folders are there and just hidden. Do you have any suggestion or opinion on that? FYI I have close to 200 apps installed.

Thanks :)

Yea unfortunately it wipes the internal and external sdcards for 90% of us :(. If they do not show up, then yea they are gone.

You're probably better off removing your external SD card, and SIM card, as well as backing up the internal SD card, before attempting any of these kind on actions. James is correct, these kind of installs DO work, but at a price - the price being wiping all data from whatever storage areas the program has access to. Same goes for being rooted and installing an OTA update or (sometimes) a custom rom. It *can* install just fine, but leave you unrooted.

Modding your phone is a series of trade-offs, and you take the bad with the good.
