Help Beyond Talk Minute Counting Info for Apps

Android Enthusiast
Hi all,
I went in search of a minute counting widget - I am on the 300 minute plan, so I wanted to keep an eye on my usage. I use Skype at home to manage my calls over wifi, but I often lose track of calls I make/receive on the road.
So I used the Minutes Checker: Virgin Mobile app initially. Two issues: 1. I began to realize I shouldn't be handing out my virgin mobile pin to a third party, as this app requires. 2. When I double checked the app against the figure from virgin mobile last night, it was off by two minutes.
So off I went in search of a widget to solve my problem. Eventually, after too many other apps to count, I found Droid Stats. It took some finessing, but I did figure out how to set this up to sync perfectly with the virgin mobile figure. In case any of you are looking for the same feature, here's how:
1.Tap the menu key for settings. On the 'Monthly Limits' menu, check 'call time limits' and set your 'free minutes' to the appropriate figure - mine is 300. Scroll to the bottom and set your 'billing month beginning' - and here's the kicker - for the day after your 'top up' date with virgin. So if I top up every 13th, set the value in this app to 14.
2. Go back to the main settings menu and click 'billing.' Make sure that under 'billing increment,' you are on the 60/10, which is recurring monthly.
3. Here's where is gets really interesting: still under billing, go to 'free numbers(calls). Press add, then type *areacodenumber. Ex: *19125555555. This excludes calls you make to your voicemail, which are free on virgin.
BUT: If you use google voice, do not add on *9125555555 - it will not count the minutes you use google voice, WHICH ARE CHARGED TO YOUR VIRGIN MINUTE ALLOTMENT (just in case you didn't know). You need not add this value at all, as calls to your voicemail are entered as above, with the 1 before the entire number.
Also, if you call virgin customer service at *86, make sure you exempt that value as well.
On the billing menu, make sure you toggle 'bill incoming calls' too.
So here's the end result on my work screen:

Not the most elegant widget, since the free version forces you to show a second figure - I chose sms data limit, which I effectively ignore.
If you choose to buy the donate/pro version of this app - here - you get a 1x1 widget that's a little more pretty, though still not entirely customizable - you can alter background transparency, but that's about it.

Just wanted to share this. I also tried a few other apps, but most had extremely clunky UI's and didn't even come close to the correct figure. Please share any better solutions for a widget you might have found.

Calls to voicemail from your VM phone are charged against your minutes. Where are you getting they're not?

Thanks for your replies. I do stand corrected on the vm issue. See:

Counts as two calls. Interesting...I had read on an actual virgin forum that they didn't count at all. Whoa.
Checked the droid data widget...and it did indeed deduct another minute from my balance. The widget settings I put above do still give an accurate readout...as you can see from the log, its just counting the one call, and not the other. So what I posted is will work for minute counting....I was wrong why, though.
Sigh. Now I go off on a quest to figure out checking voicemail for free. At least I know now. See, I knew it was a good idea to post this thread. Thanks you guys!

No prob. Just call your # from another phone (landline/friend with unlimited minutes/work, lol), let it go to voicemail, press * until you get to the prompts (I usually have to hit it 3 times), which will have you enter your # again and your passcode. Then you're in. :)

Why the heck am I up at 3AM?

I cant add the widget to my home screen L i dont even see it under widgets in running gingerbread if that helps

I downloaded a VIRGIN MOBILE MINUTE CHECKER, and its a widget in my desktop.

Search the APP STORE for it. (doesn't have any author information in the about screen).

I got the widget to work. O have all my apps to install on my sd card. So I just moved it back to my fone. And wut would you know it worked!

I prefer to just use the pin app. I think its safe.
I use that one with no problems. Even if someone signed into your account, it doesn't show your full credit card info, just the last 4 digits. So that info, at least, should be safe. I suppose someone could go in there and change your name or something silly, but *shrug* I'm going to hope the dev has better things to do with his time. :)

The Droid Info one just sounds awfully complicated.

It's not to bad, I promise, if you decide to change your mind. Someone earlier mentioned another app that had a widget and he/she hasn't said which one...so I guess I'll stick with the droid stats. I like having all my info on widgets.

RE: First message in this thread also.

Your method and proof of concept are great and seem to work.

The only thing I would add is that the VM Minutes Checker app is Open Source by the Dev and he has published the source code for review. Seems like there is almost no chance there could be anything nefarious going on with a subscriber's PIN.

But your Droid Stats method does seem sound and the Widget is updated in real time accurately.

Traffic Counter has a widget that counts minutes used instead of minutes left, like DroidStats. However, I don't know about the accuracy. On my wife's phone it showed about 62 minutes used but the actual minutes used for the same period - as checked on the VM website - was 93 minutes used. Quite a difference. On my phone the difference went the other way, showing more minutes used than actually used, but I also made some calls using a VOIP method so they would not count against my actual minutes but they would tally in Traffic Counter.

Yeah, couldn't get an accurate read for this, regardless of voip usage. Nice widget though.

The reason I stopped using this and switched to droid stats is because with the minute checker you have to open the app. droid stats displays the minutes remaining on your plan right on the widget.

VM seriously needs to offer something like this. Their current app/shortcut is crap! Especially since their website is very mobile unfriendly. If they at least had a mobile version of their site, perhaps it could be useful. But until then, the third-party minutes checker seems to work for me. And they did do a recent update to correct a glitch.

Seems like "Virgin Mobile Minute Checker" author has not updated the app for a while. I contacted him with no success. Surprisingly, Virgin Mobile themselves also does not offer any app.

Ultimately, I have started working on my own version. It is in google's play store under name "Virgin Mobile Minutes" (it has "V" and "m" letters in logo). It is free for everyone to enjoy. It is missing a widget for now - I will add it soon.

Glad to see someone stepping up and working on this :). Hope you can add the widget soon. It'll make things nice and easy.
