CalyxOS

roamin1

Newbie
So I’m reading and studying all about the privacy I lack, and was ready to flash GraphineOS but I happened across an episode of Techlore about CalyxOS.

I thought I’d do more research and thought this was a good place but I haven’t found ONE mention of it here.

Does anyone have any information or experience on it?

i do not have your phone, but here is their website:
https://calyxos.org/what

if you are rooted, just make a nandroid backup and flash it......then come back here and give a review or at least tell us how you like it or not.
I’m not too savvy with computer programming. And this is my first pixel phone. Actually arrives tomorrow so I haven’t even so much as held it, much less know anything about rooting and flashing.
None but I do know
Super Calyx P ala doe shish from Chitty Chitty Bang bang...
That’s more my speed  even with autocorrect trying to make sense out The Sound of Music quote. :p

Honestly the directions for CaylxOS look easier than the GraphineOS Directions, but then again, I know little of programming.
well we are here to help. the main thing is to read and get as much info as you can before proceeding.....so you are off to a great start:thumbsupdroid::thumbsupdroid::thumbsupdroid::thumbsupdroid:

let us know what parts you do not understand......good luck and congrats on a new phone.

Lol. I’m good up to the part where I plug it in ;)

I have a Member here who offered to flash GraphineOS for me, and I’ve only just asked if they would do CaylxOS instead, but if I could do it myself without screwing it up, I’d rather.

I like to know how things work and I’m trying to learn all I can.
Thanks for the help tho. It’s as much appreciated as it is needed.

so when it comes to rooting and flashing custom roms, it is always better to do it yourself. for one, i never would trust somebody i do not really know to root my phone. just remember this, rooting is a process that bypasses your phone's security to allow access to the system files of your phone. if you are not careful, once the phone is rooted, they could add anything to the system os that could be nefarious to you without you ever knowing it......so be careful if you plan on going that route.

if everything is in the up and up and this guy is legit, then there is also the fact that you know nothing about rooting. if something was to go wrong, you do not have the knowledge to troubleshoot the problem.

the best thing to learn something is to get your hands dirty. i would root the phone yourself. you are getting a pixel phone so the process is pretty easy actually. it is a lot easier then most phones.......just saying;)

Are there any threads or stickies here about flashing and rooting and the like?

yes, but some here in this forum are old....but the info still applies:

https://androidforums.com/threads/root-terminology.443075/

https://androidforums.com/threads/rooting-best-practices.450904/
https://androidforums.com/threads/youve-rooted-your-phone-now-what.617220/

now those are just general threads about rooting. for more specifics go to https://www.xda-developers.com/ . xda is a rooting forum where the developers like the calyxos hangs out. they usually post or publishes their rooting goodness there.

here is the specific guide for your phone from xda:

Thanks for all the references. I forgot to say thanks and Ive been busy reading.

so where do I take the download (flame from their website-https://www.calyxos.org/get) and put it in at step 2? Is that the “boot image”?

Do I need Magisk Manager to flash CaylxOS? Do I have to turn the phone on and download Magisk to the phone form the google play store?

so the guide i linked is to root the phone in general.

looks like calyxos is a custom rom that is not your typical custom rom. i found this instructions:
https://calyxos.org/installation

judging from this, all you need to do is unlock the bootloader and using commands to flash their specific firmware to install calyxos. this does take some time getting setup with adb and fastboot. so i would really read up on those before proceeding.

as far as rooting the normal way goes we can proceed with that i guide i linked earlier. and flashing other custom roms will be much easier as all of it will be done by using a custom recovery.

...all you need to do is unlock the bootloader and using commands to flash their specific firmware to install calyxos. this does take some time getting setup with adb and fastboot...
The directions for unlocking the bootloader are clear enough, but the rest is technical terms I don’t know yet. AFB?
And you make “flashing their firmwear” sound like a one click thing. But I don’t think it is

all of the instructions assume you understand to a certain level.

I’m afraid I’ll just have to play with it. And I’ve read a dozen times now about bricking and pretty much got the idea that I shouldn’t be doing this at this level of understanding.

well that is what we are here for. the hardest part would be to get adb and fastboot running. after that you open up a command terminal and enter the right fastboot commands. now in the calyxos there are a few commands that i do not full understand tbh.

main thing to do is your research first which is what you are doing, so you are heading in the right direction......if you want to go further we can at least get adb and fastboot setup on your pc.....and do not worry this part will not brick your phone.

Ok. I enabled OEM unlocking but the directions here say to turn it off and “use the up and down column buttons to turn it back in”

But that doesn’t taken to do it.

its the up volume button and power button. press and hold that together at the same time. it should boot into the bootloader
Still not working.

I opened developer mode. Backed up to settings and then selected advanced. Toggle the OEM unlocked. then it says to power off and use the up volume and power button to power on? Pressing them both at the same time and I get nothing

Got it. Power and down button unlocks the bootloader.

I see it says device status locked. Does that mean this phone is not unlocked? I specifically bought an unlocked phone. That’s doin me a confuse.

Also, it came with a adapter wire with the same small male end on either end. And an adapter. Do I need a special double ended usb for hooking to the Mac?
