Root [CDMA] Possible to downgrade bootloader?

What are advantages to the ENG bootloader? Wow, I have been dealing with rooting and all the stuff that goes with that for well over a year and I feel like a noob all over again with this handset. :D

Anyway, I appreciate the help, guys. Any insight is very much appreciated. :)

I am not 100% sure, but I believe that the S-OFF obtained by Revolutionary is not at the HBOOT level, so I think you can take an HBOOT update without losing S-OFF. I think something similar existed with the unrevoked 4ever S-OFF method. The S-OFF was at the radio level, not HBOOT, so you couldn't lose S-OFF with an HBOOT update.

I can't speak for "most people," but I personally downgraded all the way to the ENG HBOOT, and I plan to stick with it. So for this latest 2.3.4 OTA, I flashed most everything except the HBOOT. I don't see any reason to stay updated at the HBOOT level. There will never be functionality offered there that I want. ENG HBOOT has everything I'll ever need.

Although, if they come out with an HBOOT that fixes the horrific text scaling ugliness, I might consider taking it.

If you have s off with revolutionary and took the OTA for some reason, you lose s off with the bootloader update so if you want the updates flash a 2.3.4 based rom

Yeah, maybe I'm mistaken. If you rooted with Revolutionary, maybe it's not possible to upgrade the HBOOT to 1.50 without killing the S-OFF. There's really no reason to anyway.

This is just my experience. Everyones can differ...

Was at:
s-off
GB 2.3.3
hboot 1.4
twrp recovery

Flashed: Complete RUU, not the OTA but the full release from HTC.

Landed at
s-off
GB 2.3.4
hboot 1.5
HTC recovery.

Next step:
Use HTC Dev to gain bootloader unlock code and apply per there requirements.
Flashed twrp 1.0.3 (Modified for hboot 1.5)
Profited!

I cannot tell you for fact that the OTA will not remove S-OFF but it would stand to reason that if I can flash the entire RUU and maintain S-OFF then the OTA shouldn't take S-OFF. I took a risk as we all did trying this and dont plan on experimenting any further because I dont want to risk S-OFF for NOTHING. So just take it with a grain of salt... This is my experience.

Over on the Evo 4G forums, when GB first arrived, a bunch of people accepted the OTA while rooted. Results were all over the place. Some people lost S-OFF and some people kept it. Almost all of these people used the same root method (unrevoked4ever) to get S-OFF.

So I can totally see similar variations here. To be safe, don't update HBOOT. Don't accept OTAs if you're already rooted. The OTA always assume you have a stock configuration, and if you're rooted, you're not stock. Unexpected things could happen.

I am not doubting you but I remember seeing somewhere where someone took ota and lost a off. I am on phone so search is not as good but will look tomorrow. I know ruu is stock from htc not rooted or anything but... I wouldn't take the chance. Like I said I am not doubting you, I need to look more onto this

Indeed!

I would never ever lie. That's my reputation! You may not know me from squat but I have a pretty big name on some other forums :D

Be warned, like I said... I did this using the RUU method. Not the OTA method but I dont see why there would be a difference. My General advice... DONT TAKE THE OTA if you dont have to!

And I can also respect the "pic or it didint happen" rule. Dont get me wrong. I just thought it was funny when you called ME out... lol I dont hink I have ever been called out before. Ahahaha... Its all good!

So when I went to update to 2.08.651.2 by recovery, that went fine. BUT when I went to flash the new radios, PRI, etc by RUU I had downloaded the wrong one. I Unrooted my phone after I updated. Now im stuck on Hboot 1.5 the thing is I still have S-off
Would it be possible for me to downgrade my Hboot?

And since no one believes anyone on this forum.

if you notice the difference between you and scrosler is his says unlocked and yours says locked so... move forward with caution but we are here to support you

:p

p.s. this is the bootloader i am running, it has many more commands in it than the stock bootloader so it is not bad to have

You didn't do anything wrong and did the same steps I did.

You just need to flash a custom recovery and reflash super user or Custom ROM of choice.

By no means should even consider touch hboot if you are 1.5.... You will not have a good day.

You have s-off and that is what is important. Get yoru yourself twrp 1.0.3 modded for hboot 1.5 and enjoy!

You have a golden egg that many will be envious of! lol

that locked above s-off worries me
perhaps he may have to unlock via htc to go any farther

That is what im trying to avoid, trying to down grade it so I can reroot it.

Also, I see xHausx has a shipped hboot, would it be safe for me to use that one just so i can get it unlocked again?

if you have s-off you should be able to downgrade the bootloader:
[HBOOT] Engineering Bootloader For Extended Fastboot Commands - xda-developers
this is the engineering bootloader. it is the only one i can find and flashing instructions are there. let us know what happens. it does say s-off but above that it says locked, so you may be stuck.

Do not do this! You messing with hboot on 1.5 with locked device. You can potentially hard brick!!!

He needs to go to HTCDev and unlock.... Sorry I forgot to mention that in my earlier post. But yes, that is how you get true unlock status.

I updated my other post to indicate the missing step of going to htcdev to unlock. This will have no affect on your S-OFF status.

Be happy for what you have because many are trying to acquire and are failing because they never had S-OFF.

so, you kept s-off and had to unlock via htc? i am getting the picture now.

ps edited my post re bootloader so not to cause problems

you are locked with s-off, i have not seen this one yet. try flashing recovery and su and we will go from there. DONT TOUCH YOUR BOOTLOADER YET!!!!!!

Well what one should I be doing first unlocking or trying to flash a recovery?

You have to go to HTCDev to unlock to flash custom recovery.

On HTC Dev they will send you an email confirmation, bla bla bla... Follow there steps.

Once done download the twrp for hboot 1.5. If you cant find I might be able to grab ti real quick but I am at work so resources and time are limited but I will tell you there is a thread on XDA with it.

Exactly, thats what I was trying to say with my dealyed postings. Dont 'F' with hboot unless you are prepared for a brick. No one has publicly posted any results with downgrading. I have been talking to one of the guys at revolutionary (or a subsidary of but eitherway a very high ranking dude!) and they are looking at what it takes to downgrade. If memory serves me they actually can but its not public release ready. Dont quite me on that part! Keep in mind this down grade would only be useful if you don't have S-OFF before applying HTC OTA / RUU. Otherwise there is no value in downgrading to hboot 1.4!

Yep! My bad for skipping that step.
