CyanogenMod USB tethering - Has anyone gotten it to work on XP?

I have a T-Mobile G1 running CyanogenMod 4.2.12.2. I have never been able to get USB Tethering ("Internet Tethering" in the options) to work on Windows XP. (It works on Windows 7 without installing anything.)

I downloaded some HTC software that someone recommended to enable this to work. It was the HTC Sync software for the Hero. It didn't help at all.

I plug in the phone with tethering enabled and nothing happens. No alert box saying that the device was found, no new connection in my Network Connections folder. All I get is a device in Device Manager named "HTC Remote NDIS based Device" with a warning icon on it.

I've been using Tetherbot via ADB at work, but it's flaky as hell!

Has anyone gotten CM's built-in USB tethering to work on XP?
