Root Evo 4G Stuck/Frozen

My friend gave me his Evo that has been sitting in his desk drawer for about 5 months because he couldnt get it to work.
Here are the issues:
He got it from a friend/acquaintance over a year ago and with micfroyo on it

2. Once the phone turns on it can not be unlocked, the swipe feature or touchscreen is disabled.

3. I have done a hard reset, wiped out the cache and everything on it and it still doesnt work.

4. I have tried loaded the sd card with unrevoked and pc36img, but the sd card sometimes is read (hit or miss). it now says "s-on".

5. i tried rebooting to install pc36img, it checks the file, loads it but never prompts me to install yes or no.

6. i figured if i unrooted the phone all the problems would go away but unrooting has been a pain. any suggestions?

If it has s-on your already unrooted you can just run the RUU from Hboot. I would have just installed a new ROM would have been much easier. Also if its hit and miss with the sdcard you may want to check the card and see if the problem is with it or if you have another issue. Put the card in a card reader and in WINDOWS run the following command
chkdsk x: /f/r
replace x with the actual drive letter.
Also will need to tell us what the PC36IMG file your trying to run is? that is a very generic file name to do a few things (install recovery, splash screen, etc)

oh btw welcome to the forums :)

Where can I get the ruu file that I need. I was basically following the YouTube videos I watched. I want to go back to the stock version so that I could take the phone back to sprint. The SD card is brand new as of 3 hrs ago. If you can give me an easier way to get back to stock that would be great. Then I can use sprints insurance to get me a new phone.

I wish you would have found us here before you started trying things...It would have been much easier to go into recovery and just get an updated rom on there.

Even with s-on you can do it as long as you still have a custom recovery

So do expert, so do I. I don't think I have a custom recovery, maybe I should rephrase that, how do I know if I have a custom recovery or not. Everything else I have done hasn't worked so I'm all ears. And thanks for all the helpful info, I really appreciate it.

go to your hboot and look for Recovery Menu Item use volume down to scroll down to the option then push power to accept. If you get a Red Triangle with an exclamation point then you do not have a custom recovery.

I have a recovery screen and I can get to it but what do I do from there, thank you again

since you have a custom recovery you should still be able to flash a new rom. How about post us everything you see on your hboot screen. This will be a big help to us to see where we need to go from here.

This is curious.

You're S-ON, but you have a custom recovery. I guess the next question is, what do you want to do? Your options are:

  • Flash unrevoked-forever.zip in recovery. This will unlock your NAND, and will allow to to flash a newer custom ROM (but this isn't guaranteed to fix your original issue, if in fact it was caused by hardware failure)
  • Flash a PC36IMG through HBOOT to return the device to completely stock condition (it'll remove your custom recovery). This should allow you to determine whether the software was somehow at fault, or confirm that the touch screen has actually failed.

If you follow the 2nd option and everything works, you can use urEVOked3 to unlock the NAND and re-root the device.

P.S. I know this was already mentioned, but if your device is having issues reading the SD card, you might also want to try a different card, or reformatting the existing card. Sometimes they get corrupted, and can cause the files to not be recognized by HBOOT.

The second option worked. Thank you Thank you Thank you... the only problem is, the sd card is still having problems being read. In order for me to flash the pc36img i had to hold the back of the battery/sd button down the entire time, if I were to let it go it would stop reading the card. any solutions??

For now I am at least back to original rom without the screen issue so maybe I can use my sprint insurance to replace the phone for me??

If you have insurance, I'd say that's definitely the way to go, since your issue sounds hardware related.

Sounds like its hardware related to me if your having the issues across multiple roms

I did a basic reset and its working again. Maybe it only works for 20-30 min. I dont really know. Do you think Sprint would exchange it for a screen issue?

They should but that doesn't mean they will but generally with hardware issues they will. That would be the best option is to contact them and allow them to determine what you need to do next. They may upgrade you to a 3VO. You have it back to factory settings so it shouldn't be a problem.

Let's hope so. I will keep you guys posted on what happens with Sprint. It will be in about a couple of weeks because starting tomorrow I will be in Peru but when I get back I will take care of all of that.

Again a million thanks to all of you here at Android Forums.
