Ex iPhone users support, tips, and overall new experience thread

Hi All-
I am a new Android user as of a few days ago after happily dumping my iPhone 4. So far I have really enjoyed my SG 2 Skyrocket.

I have already switched to Battery 2X to help manage my battery as I went from 100% to 30% in 6 hours today with moderate usage so I am hoping this app will aliviate this issue.

I am learning quite a bit reading through this thread but wanted to get some insight on Swipe and whether or not it is worth using?

Also if anyone else has some good suggestions on what I can do to modify this bad boy I would appreciate it. I use Last.fm and Amazon Mp3 for almost all my music so that has been a HUGE advantage over the iPhone 4 since Amazon and Apple do not play nice with eachother.

I realize this is fairly generic of a request for app reccomendations but because I am so new to this OS and until I use the phone more I dont quite have any specific questions as of yet.

Thanks!

Hi, enjoying my new skyrocket. Exchanged it for iphone 4s. Have had my skyrocket for about a week now. Last night i plug phone in to recharge it. This morning to my surprise it hadn't charged. Tried other outlets and still no charging. Power phone off, turn it back on and it started charging. Should i be concern?

My best suggestion to anyone new to android is this... if you can think of something you want your phone to do, search for it in the market because there is almost always an app that does it.

Glad you guys are enjoying your phones!

Chidog1...keep an eye on that...it may have just been a fluke, if it continues definitely look into service options

Having problems with receiving and sending MMS videos. Can received and send picture with regular txts messaging. Is anyone else with skyrocket having same problem. Search other forum, they were having problems with droids. Downloaded go sms pro didn't fix the problem.

Hello everyone,

I am new to this forum. I started my cellphone experience with Nokia and then after trying one Windows device back in 2004, stayed with Nokia till 2007 before moving to iPhone and have had all the models ever since. This time instead of getting the 4S, I have gotten the skyrocket. While I like the device so far, there are a few things that are irritating me and making me think about my 30 day exchange. I used to be jail-break, unlock savvy back in the day but don't really want to get into all of that right now, and would prefer to use apps that are out there and learn from other users' experience.

Here are my biggest concerns which I hope someone can help me resolve:

1) I access my work email MS Exchange 2010 on this device and have two issues:
a) When I move to conversation view, everytime I move out of this email account or app and come back it takes about 20 seconds to load my emails. I spoke to the Tech Center and they had no fix, rather than the usual pull your battery and master reset. I did all that with no use. The only way the lag reduced was when I reduced the syncing of my emails to 3 days. Now it takes about 5-6 seconds for the mails to load when I open the app. I am not talking about new arriving mails, I am just talking about the ability to see the mails. I see a blank screen for a few seconds before any mail is visible. What could be the issue?
b) The conversation view shows every email in bold irrespective of the fact that if it actually has any unread email in the thread or now. This sucks as everything looks unread in conversation view forever even if all the emails are read. Any tips on how to fix this? I am a big thread email guy and need to see my emails that way to quickly get context on conversations happening rather than navigating email by email.

2) Notifications - especially around getting the device to wake up on things like WhatsApp or Calendar notifications. I am using iPhone Notifications after reading someone's suggestion here, but it would be nice if Android let this be flexible like Apple had. Apple's notification really rocked with a lot of control.

3) When I use the samsung keyboard, there is no way to switch off the key press vibration feedback, so even though that seems the best keyboard I don't use it. I am getting used to Swype which is a cool feature.

4) Is there a way to get rid of my lock screen? Since the only way to get rid of it is by swiping, it's like a waste of time. Why can't I get rid of it by pressing Home, or get rid of it all together?

5) I used to use Privately on iPhone - a browser that would not store any cookies and would kill all sessions and history as soon as the home key was pressed. Is there something similar on Android? The only one I've tried is Free Private Browser but when you press the home key and come back this app is still functioning and does not automatically kill all sessions and drop all history unless you manually exit it.

The email is my biggest pain as I use this device heavily for work email.

I will come back with more questions as I get used to the device more. I definitely want to get workarounds of all my issues so I can keep this phone as it is gorgeous.

Appreciate your help.

Thanks.

I had windows phones since the beginning then switched over to an iPhone 3GS a couple of years ago. I liked the simplicity but hated not being able to customize it. I see the iPhone as the "Smartphone for Dummies" ... although I know a lot of smart folks with iPhones, they just done like to tinker and customize, like I do with my phone.

I love the bigger screen, the processing speed / graphics and a myriad of other things. I'm looking forward to ICS next quarter, since that hopefully really make it hum.

I always liked to have the latest and greatest Windows phone (e.g. HTC Advantage was my favorite), when I got my iPhone I felt like I was getting plain vanilla that everyone else had ... like following the lemmings.

Now I have a powerful computer in my hand that I've rooted and even though I've only had it for about a month, it still amazes me. There are some problems/irritations (like I'm currently trying to get my Android Keyboard to hook up and it won't connect), but I'm at least able to try and not just be told iOS doesn't do that so Pound Sand.

I'd give the 3GS a solid 5 out of 10, where the Skyrocket is a 9 and hopefully a 10 when ICS come out.

All the best to everyone !!! :)

Yep. I was a longtime Windows Mobile user and loved it. Microsoft's bastardization of the OS when they released Windows Phone made it an unviable option for me and Android has supplied the features I need in order to access remote web servers, alter web code for clients, and send it back to their server without leaving the local park.

Hi... Sorry if this info has been posted already.

Volume control = no
1 click = pause / play / answer / hang up
2 slow clicks = next song
3 clicks = nothing

Thought this might be helpful.

Cheers.

Hey Bud,

here you go... I just switched from iPhone 4 to the SGSII LTE with Rogers (e.g. basically the skyrocket)

Music: Use DoubleTwist (syncs super easy and guides you through the USB mode set up, loads all iTunes playlists etc., scrobbles for Last.FM, great UI on the phone, great add-ons if you wanna pay from 4.99 to 8.99 (auto album art grabbing, etc.)

Ringtones: DL an app that lets you make them on your phone (eg. "Ringtone Maker") and that will put them in a usable spot on your device or will allow you to set it from within the app.

OR

Do what you apparently found out and move your MP3s to the right directory (My Files > Media > Audio >
here's a vid to show you how to add ringtones, alerts and alarms to separate folders: How to: use your own music as notification (text) ringtones on Android - YouTube

% Battery life: DL the widget Battery Solo Widget - Good options, can show lots of details about your battery charge/temp etc. (also is very small 1x1 and decent looking)

Lemme know if you have any other questions... chances are I've had them too as this is only day 4 with my new device.

Cheers!

TFS

Hi all,

Traded my iPhone 4S yesterday for the Skyrocket and after some initial frustration (it's not necessarily intuitive) things are getting easier.

Example: I was told that you can put any media file and use it as ringtone but I figured out that it will not let me use the old iphone ringtones in .m4r format but wanted it in .mp3 (AFTER I had figured out that I needed to create the dang directory). Other one that got me that you had to 'mount' the phone via USB vs. just connecting it to the PC.

Some of the questions that are flustering me right now:

How the heck can I look at how much battery life I have left in% or other metrics? (vs. just the little pic on top).

It says I have 1.92 GB system storage. Experienced Android users here at work say that's not a lot and to guard it jealously. My question is this, if I have 11GB free - why can't I just up/extend the system storage by let's say an extra 2GB?

My home network does not assign automatic IP addresses, last night I spent an hour trying to figure out how to do that manually. Whenever I say modify network configuration, it just gives me the option to change password. Not to assign ip address, etc. I know it HAS to be possible... just can't figure out how.

What are some of the best music applications which I can use to transfer my music to the phone?

Does anyone know of a real good primer for Android?

Thanks a ton for this forum and all help!

Just wanted to add this little tip in here.

I've found that one thing Android isn't as good with is the settings for things.

A lot of apps and widgets have basic settigns controlled by the OS (in the settings screen within one of the menus) but some have their own.

To access these, open the app and press the menu button on the bottom of your device. This will open a contextual menu that will give you app-specific options.

Hope this helps!

Don't use the Samsung keyboard!

long-press on the gear icon on the keyboard and choose Swype. Again... a learning curve, but you'll LOVE it in 3 minutes.

Some crazy Asian set the new speed record for txting with Swype. Killed the old record.

Enjoy!

The only learning curve I can't seem to master is the keyboard. I can type fast with the iPhone keyboard but finding myself constantly having to hit the back space key... or the spacebar when i meant to hit the keys above the spacebar.

Is there a way temporary turn off notifications while watching movies or listening to music?

I think if you just turn the phone to silent it'll still capture the notifications in the pull down notification screen, but they won't make noises when they come it.

Just hold the power button for a couple seconds and choose "Silent Mode" from the list.

Also, there are widgets you can add that can quickly adjust this functionality. I just got "Beautiful Widgets" and it's in that package.

Hope this helps!

I can not get my car stereo to read my phone audio thru USB. I literally have no idea what to do.

Does the music have to be in a certain area?

It just keeps saying that it needs to be unmounted from a PC.

My Vivid was just plug in and use as a disk drive...

Ex iPhone user here...love the Skyrocket/LTE experience. Only thing I miss is having the latest OS on my phone all the time. No more iPhones for me.

New Skyrocket user here as well. Ex iphone user (3g & still use a 4 for work).

Really enjoying this Skyrocket so far. Still learning how to use.

Things I'm trying to figure out.......

1. How to totally remove apps (bloatware & other useless apps to me ) permanently from my Skyrocket ?? like Gmail & other at&t apps

2. How to get the most of battery life ?? (downloaded Easy Battery Saver) does this app need to be running at all times for it to work ??

Thanks

I made the switch a little bit ago and havent even thought to look back to iOS and Apple. I like making my own decisions about my phone.

To answer your questions...
1) The best way I know how to completely remove an app is to go to the Marketplace and go to "My Apps" then choose the app you want to remove and click Uninstall. I believe the AT&T apps are locked in and are unable to be removed but I could be wrong.

2) I currently use 2X Battery and it has improved my battery life significantly. It essentially will turn off your data connection when the screen is locked and turn it back on immediately after you unlock the phone. You can even set up intervals where it will turn your data connection on briefly to pull in any new emails, updates, etc...

Hope this helps!

I have had my Skyrocket for three days. I previously used iPhone 3G, which I had come to really dislike. It was very slow and small. I live in an ATT LTE market and wanted a fast phone, and a phone with a screen I could see. It has not disappointed me. I have had no issues with battery problems mentioned in earlier posts, even using it first night non-stop.

My main issues to date are tying to understand the entire Android experience. Having used the iPhone for 3+ years, learning a new process, on the fly, can be challenging. There are so many bells and whistles on this phone and O/S that can be a little overwhelming for a novice to intermediate user.

Any suggestions on tutorials, etc. for making this a fun and good transition?

Picked up a white one. Wow! i don't miss my iphone at all! One sweet phone!:D

Just picked up a white one yesterday switching from an iPhone 4. So far I am happy with the switch and now I can see both sides. I am a registered iPhone developer looking to get into Android, figured this was a good device to start with.

On on the 3rd day with my skyrocket coming from a iPhone 3g and so far I'm hating it.

There are plenty things I love about the phone like making my own ringtones ect...

But I mostly use my phone for internet forums (such as this one) and I find it lacking.

biggest issue I had is with pictures. It didn't want to load half the pics. And since one of my favorite pass times is reading rockcrawler build threads with lots of pics that's a big problem.

SO i got another browser (dolphin hd) that didn't do any better.

then I got dolphin mini. that showed the pics but stacked them horizontally causing the screen to be so gigantic it took for ever to scroll around.

Then I tried Opera. This browser loads the pics nice but ever time I write a reply is kicks me back to home screen.

And these issues are not just on one site. I'm having problems with pirate4x4, suzukicrawlers, zukiworld ect...

My old ass iPhone did not have any of these problems. It would load evey page just fine and show every pic....

Please assume I know nothing when giving instructions. I found other instructions online but they all assumed I knew how to get to folders or my app drawer and I am lost! Basic info please, not all of us are a whiz with all this stuff.

also, why are there so many iphone owners using this forum to complain about the skyrocket? If they don't like the skyrocket, go back to iphone. I expect a forum like tthis to be here for assistance, not for complaints. It seemed like a lot of posts to wade thru reading about who likes which phone better.
