Just got a reply from the Gelaskins rep:
Good news all around
whats makes them so good?
They're really purdy.
They have a neat selection of artwork, no doubt, but most if it is a little too busy for my tastes.
Eh i'm not looking to put vinyl stickers on my phone. They tend to come up on the edges and get dirt stuck underneath them. Some of them are purdy but i'd rather not go that route. Thanks for the info though.
Thanks - I'm glad to hear this, I've been watching the site to see when they were coming out. I have one on my itouch, and love it.
I used to make custom skins with skinit.com for my Blackberries. I'm a graphic designer and would make all own skins and constantly get compliments, as people thought that it was the shell of the phone, and not actually just a sticker/skin.
Although the print quality was excellent, fitment was perfect, and customer service great, the problems I always had were where the very, very thin sides that run along the sides of the screen would always separate (the top plastic coating of the skin would separate from the actual printed design underneath), and over time, the design would fade and the sides would pull away from the phone's screen and I'd have to cut them off.
I'm not sure if I'll ever get a vinyl skin again unless it wraps around all sides and edges. When it's just cut so thin for around the screen, it just will not last, unfortunately.
I've had one of their skins on my Ipod just over four years now and this has never happened. About 10 months ago I got a new Ipod classic and took the skin off my old Ipod and transferred the skin to my new Ipod and still haven't had any problems with it.
Of course the Ipods have a very smooth and glossy metal and hard plastic surface for the skins to adhere to. I'm curious how well they will work with the soft touch plastic battery cover on the Incredible.
The parts of the Gelaskin that go around my Ipod screen are maybe 1/8th to 1/16th of an inch wide and it's still as good as the day I put it on my original Ipod. Even after taking it off my old Ipod and putting it on my new Ipod the edges are fine. I don't know how skinny the area you're talking about is but the experience I have with Gelaskins has been good enough for me to consider ordering one for my new phone.
They're about the same, about 1/16th. I got excited for a minute, thinking maybe I should go with Gelaskins instead, but an iPod is slightly different from a phone.
I have a feeling the reason it goes bad on a phone is because the phone is constantly up against your head, skin, etc. It probably picks up oils from the skin, hair, etc., then when you're constantly rubbing and moving the phone while it's up against your head... it just gets ruined over time.
Yeah that's true. I didn't think about that. I might still pick one up for my Incredible if I find a design I like. It's only $15 and if it works as well as the one for my Ipod it will be $15 well spent.
Yeah I might design another one myself, I was planning on it, but hopefully it will at least fold over along the sides a bit.
I would think that if a vinyl skin wrapped over an edge of a device it would peel easier than if it only had to stick to a single flat surface. I could be wrong but I'm imagining that what jwm2 described would happen if the skin wrapped over an edge.
I used Gelaskins on my Blackberry Storm (don't hate, I'm getting an Incredible) since I got it. I never had issues with the stickers turning up unless I didn't apply it correctly in the first place. I replaced the Gelaskin once, but not because it wasn't doing it's job, or it wasn't sitting right... but because I abused the Storm to the point that the artwork was all scratched up and not as vibrant and pretty. And, well, I wanted a new look anyway.
I use Gelaskins on everything... PSP, Ipod Touch, Ipod Nano, Blackberry Storm. The only issues I've ever had was applying some of the more complex sections. But after application, always golden.
i bought a skin from decalgirl.com for my storm and i've had it on for over a year and just recently the top piece on the back by the camera lens started to peel so i took it off. other than that, it's sticking to my storm like glue! no other issues of peeling and it gets tossed in and out of my purse on a daily basis.
will be interesting to see how skins will stick to the back of the incredible.
looking forward to the D.I gelaskins from GelaSkins | iPad Skins, iPhone Skins, iPod Skins, Laptop Skins, Gaming Skins, Custom Skins, Giclee Prints and more... i also checked DecalGirl : Stylish Protection For Your Gadgets! out, i might get one for my ipod touch too, but i already have a a case, it is neccesary to buy a case then if you already have gelaskins?
