Help gingerbread update wifi fixed? and other questions

Tbloke

Newbie
Can anybody tell me if the wifi problem that seemed to be present on the incredible s after updating to gingerbread has been fixed yet? As I want to upgrade but need my WiFi. Also has anybody noticed a benefit with the battery life or anything else that makes this a must have upgrade?

I updated my phone today (Android 2.3.3 with HTC Sense 2.1) and Wi Fi signal/speed is as good as it was.

I also have better battery life.

It seems that the latest update fixed the wifi problem. I've been able to connect to wifi networks that were unreachable to me after the gingerbread update. I haven't tested this extensively but it looks good. My home wifi connection is too good to use it as a test bed.

So far I haven't noticed any other obvious improvements. The 2G/3G radio reception is still as bad as before. No change in battery life in my opinion.

What latest version? I am on 2.3.3 and it still absolutely SUCKS! It is the most annoying thing ever to have such a great phone with great potential but basic things dont work. Wifi signal is still terrible. battery life is crap.... i dont even last a day with mine.... and I dont even make that many calls!

Basically, I think its a terrible phone and once I get back to the city I will be demanding a replacement.

I ahve been in contact with HTC many times already but still they have not fixed the fecking problem!

So so frustrating.

So my advice is still NOT to upgrade to 2.3.3

Kinda sux to hear all those problems. Everything has improved on gingerbread for me,call quality, speed, battery life and no issues to report, including WiFi. I don't know if this helps but I ALWAYS factory reset the phone before and after upgrading.

I was talking about the small bugfix update released about 1-2 weeks ago. It updates the build number to 2.30.405.1 and it seems to have fixed the wifi issue that came with the gingerbread update.

I personally don't have any problems with battery life. My battery easily lasts a full day with moderate to heavy use and 2+ days with light use. I wasn't even expecting anything more. It wouldn't hurt to have a bit more juice in the battery, though...

I have never had such a good reception with a phone. It is a lot better than the Nexus S, Iphone 3gs and all my previous Nokia.

My experience is totally opposite. I've been actively using mobile phones since 1995 (I'm in the industry) and I've extensively tested probably hundreds of them (software&service development, network testing etc). The IS is one of the worst I've ever used in regards to 2G/3G radio sensitivity. My oldest Nokia is still far superior in comparison.

The antenna design in this phone is abysmal. I do hope HTC manages to develop a firmware update that improves the reception. I hate the lousy reception but I love everything else about the phone. Oh well, the camera could be better (less compression and less over-aggressive sharpening, please).

You should try another one. There is no way this phone is worse than the one I mentioned. Every one I know who own that phone are amazed by the quality of reception.

Or maybe you have a terrible carrier...

My carrier is very good. I know several people who are suffering from the same problems and have had their phones serviced several times. Back covers replaced, circuit boards replaced, software upgraded, some even got replacement phones from later batches. Still the same bad reception issues. And also on different operators' networks.

The biggest tech. magazine in Nordic countries recently tested the latest smart phones. They have specialized radio signal measurement equipment and very high expertise in the matter (unlike most online mags who know absolutely nothing about radio network testing). The IS was really bad also according to their measurements. It was the worst of the bunch. For example the Samsung Galaxy S2 was much better.

This is the first phone I've ever used that has frequent echoing problems on both ends (common issue) and lousy call quality even when the network signal strength is ok. I've worked for a big network operator for 14 years specializing in mobile devices, so I know a lousy radio module implementation when I see one. This phone is a fine example of such sloppy work, I'm sorry to say. On every IS forum there are at least a couple of threads complaining about bad call quality and echoing problems.

I can't say if this problem can be fixed with a software update. Most likely not completely, at least. But hopefully HTC can do at least something. Their service centers can't fix these problems at the moment, that much is certain.
