Root Got a couple questions/Need opinions on rooting

Heres my specs:
Bone stock evo 4g
Android Gingerbread 2.3.5
Hboot 2.18

So I decided it's finally time to root my evo 4g. I've had it for 2 years now and am going to hold off upgrading until samsung pushes the update to the gs3 next year so I want to jazz up this old phone. I've read Ocnbrze's guide on rooting so I feel I have a grasp of the general process although admittedly my only experience in this field was when I had a iphone and you could jailbreak it OTA which was truly for dummies. Anyhow my question requires a slight explanation I currently live/work in an area where high speed internet is unavailable strangely though I have a "fair" 4g connection.
1) So since I can't OTA root my evo is it possible to save the files needed to my sd and transfer them to my pc via mass storage?

And assuming that is possible;

2) In your humble opinion what is the best/most stable rom to install once I finish rooting?

Keep in mind I'd like to use my phone both as a wireless 4g hotspot (for psn) and wired (via usb) to my pc. I hear tons of rom names being thrown around but with only this phone to research it's painfully time consuming reading single page user reviews for each so I've decided the very knowledgeable and helpful guys who frequent these forums could help save me some time. From what I can tell unrevoked is capable of rooting my phone with s-off + no watermark so I'm leaning in that direction to root it I'm just wondering what rom/kernel you guys suggest?

And lastly have there been any updates to jellybean or Ics that have the codecs so the camera/wiimax work? From what I've read I'd have to flash a rom running gingerbread to keep 4g connectivity. Any and all help is much appreciated and thanks to all who took the time to read my lengthy post. A special thanks to all who reply as well.

peace

I'm somewhat confused here. If the files you're talking about are the ones needed for the rooting process then those will need to be saved on your pc under a separate folder. I'd name it Android to stay with the outline of his guide. If you're talking about losing apps on your phone then you might look at something like Backup Pro. You would use that to save them during rooting but it won't be needed afterwards.

And assuming that is possible;

Strike is probably the best choice for a daily ICS rom, however it won't give you the 4g you want. I'd go with the latest Deck's 500 offering. It's about the best thing going and will give you the 4g you're looking for.

On the wired side I prefer Klink. It doesn't get mentioned on this site much, but for me has always been faster than pdanet and is a reliable connection.

peace

I am also a little puzzled by what your intent is, as to why you want to put the files on your sd card.

Like biker said, some files will be put into the "Android" folder you create.
Other files like HTC sync and Java should be run on the computer you will be using.

Feel free to ask anymore questions you may have about the rooting process. We will be more than happy to help :D

Also in the guide, there are apps you can use to backup some files etc.
Like Biker said, MyBackupPro can be used too. :)

1)to answer your question, yes. i always recommend that you back your sd card to your pc and even on the cloud anyways. as far as files go, there is nothing on your card that is necessary that you have to have in order for the phone to work or needed to root the phone. you will be needing to move some files to the sd card during the rooting process, but it is all explained in the guide.

2)as far as roms go, i would go here: http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/618281-list-utilities-apps-roms-kernels-og-evo.html and go to the staff picks. it has some great suggestions on roms for you. but i would suggest that you give mikg3.11 a go just to get your feet wet first then feel free to try any of the others that are out there.

good luck and keep the questions coming if you have them.

My apologies for not being clearer @mikestoney what I meant was I do not currently have internet at home so while having a pc it's utterly useless at the moment & at work internet is limited to official business only so my only access currently is my evo so I was asking would it have been possible to download unrevoked to my evo save it to the sd card then simply transfer unrevoked to the pc to start the process. I fully understand your confusion though I don't always explain myself correctly. I think ocnbrze said I could? I'm not positive though and I will definitely check out the staff picks like I said this small screen is a pain so I didn't even see that thread before. I'm looking for something that will allow 4g wifi tethering, is stable but can break the monotony of htc's now boring sense. I guess I am going to recapture that feeling we all had when we first got our evo's 2+ years ago that "holy sh*t this phone kicks ass" and I'm looking for the rom that'll do that. But thanks for your replies gents if I run into any problems rooting it I'll just slap myself because the guides spell it out for me lol thanks gents

yes you could download root files that you need on your phone and then tranfer the files to a pc. however, unrevoked will not work for what you have. you will need to use this guide to root your phone:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...-rooting-gingerbread-2-3-5-dummies-guide.html

and mikg3.11 is a great rom to start out with like i suggested. it has the sprint hotspot hacked(though it only works with 3g) or you can use the wireless wifi tethering app found in this guide:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...net-tethering-w-evo-4g-3g-wireless-wired.html
