Root [Guide] Installing TWRP and making a backup

Download TWRP (needs to be on your phone, this is for both KitKat and Lollipop)
Install Kernel Adiutor

1-Open Kernel Adiutor and tap the menu and scroll down to Backup
2-Just to be safe, make a backup of the stock recovery by tapping the (+), then Backup, then Recovery.
Give it a name (something like stockrecovery is fine) and hit OK.
3-Now tap the Flash IMG button and locate the TWRP file you downloaded.
Hit OK and choose Recovery. Confirm the next prompt (it should match the picture below) and let it install.

4-Reboot into recovery to make sure it installed correctly, and make a backup, by turning off the phone and holding Vol - + Power until 'Factory Reset Processing' appears on the screen and release. It is a little slow to load, so don't panic (it shouldn't take more than 3 minutes though).
Assuming it loaded you should have a screen with 8 buttons and some navigation buttons across the bottom.
5-Tap the Backup button to get to the configuration screen. Make sure System, Data, and Boot are selected. Below that window it shows where the backup will be stored and how much room is there. Tap it change to external storage if you want (odds are internal storage won't have enough room). I would also select Enable Compression to save some space on your card. Swipe across the bottom of the screen to start the back up. This usually takes 6-8 minutes on my phone.
6-When it's done, tap back then tap Reboot, then System to reboot normally.

IMPORTANT:
This will not save your user data stored on the internal storage!
This only saves the system, kernel, and internal app data!

You know what the funny thing is? I was thinking of doing this yesterday! I saw the All Thing Root Guide and though I'd make something to feature ROMS, recoveries, mods, etc. Dang yeh beat me to it :P

Hey guy,

If you ever get the time to make a video of this backup guide it would be awesome for newbs like me.
It's in the plan. I'm actually going to take and backup my phone and go all the way through reverting back to stock and rerooting.

Lol, I had the same thought a few days ago but never got around to it.
It's been in the back of my mind for a couple months now.

Video for installing TWRP and making a backup in OP now!

I just watched it. Very cool! I don't think there's any other YouTube vid that shows how to do this using Kernel Adiutor. Very useful and less intimidating when doing this the first time. Just follow along. Special thanks to the cat as well. :) I have an SD card coming in the mail, so unfortunately I'll have to wait til it gets here. I just won't mess with any rooted apps or delete anything til it gets here. Cheers!

Thanks... I started the channel with the intention of doing a gaming channel, and I do intend to have gaming on there, but I've been having an unreasonable amount of difficulty getting videos made and I'm not sure my personality fits that mode quite so much, at least until I get more comfortable in front if the camera, so I think it's going to go more in a tech advice/tutorial direction.

Hope this thread isn't too old already. I use Link2SD and this version of TWRP can't find/mount/backup ext-sd partitions like the one link2sd uses. Any way to add this to a future version? I'd be glad to help beta-test. Thanks!

I doubt anyone will be making a newer version. Feel free to use the other version if you want. Curious why you need to access that in TWRP?

Link2SD greatly helps devices with smaller internal storage by linking apps, data, libs, obb, etc. to an ext4 partition on the SD card. If this isn't backed up, only parts of each app are included in the nandroid, and the backup is worse than useless after installing/uninstalling apps or switching ROMs. Other devices I've owned had this support in Twrp, so I just expected it was in all natively until my volt couldn't find my ext-sd partition.

If someone could get that partition to back up and restore, it'd really make this device almost one of the best out there, as it's biggest limitation is the small internal size.

What other version were you mentioning?
I'm aware of what link2sd does, I use it myself. I usually just move the entire app, making it self contained within the partition. The links get backed up with the nand, do it never occurred me to backup the partition.

You said other versions had support, I thought you meant other versions of our TWRP. There are some different versions floating around here...2.8.5.0, and 2.8.3.0 I believe. Try searching one of them up. Don't know if they have support, or why this one doesn't.

Wow, just spent my whole evening searching for and installing recoveries for the volt and not one backed up by sd-ext partition. Several came up with an error saying "sd-ext not found", but none of them worked. Guess no dev working on this device wants to be able to backup sd-ext. That's sad... ='(

Finally checked out the video. Nice work bro. What did you use for recording? Also what did you use for audio sync/editing?
