Help Help--terrible freezing while charging

megapixle

Newbie
When my EVO is charging it freezes as to become almost completely unusable. Finger presses, swipes, etc. are only barely registered, if at all. Multitouch completely doesn't work. The 4 buttons at the bottom rarely work.

The problem persists across multiple chargers, even the stock charger, and it doesn't matter whether I'm plugged in to the wall or into my PC via USB. But here's the confusing part: the problem only seems to occur when I plug in at work. I've never experienced the problem when charging at home. Is the voltage in my outlets at work somehow screwed up? Too much/little/inconsistent power?

I've only had my EVO for about 25 days, so should I try to exchange it? It would be a pain since I'm already rooted, customized, etc. but it would probably be worth the inconvenience if it would fix the problem.

Any ideas???

Does it only do it at work when plugged directly into a power outlet or does it do it if you try to plug in directly from your work computer? If it is only from the outlet then if you have a maintenance man on site I would see if he would be willing to take a multimeter and check the voltage and the hertz cycles to make sure you are getting between 110-120 volts ac and 60 Hz. If not then no mater what charger you use it will be impossible for the use adaptor to properly step down the voltage to the usb standard of 5 volts.

I've plugging directly into multiple outlets, a power strip, even directly into my UPS, and directly to my PC via USB, all with the same result.

all with multiple cables? same result?

bad rom maybe have you tried reflashing rom and or kernel?

Your evo will probably be fine. Both my white and black evos did this the first few week I owned them. Its like they need time to get used to charging. They were completely unresponsive the first couple of days, and less so as time went on. My current black evo stopped doing that about a week ago. But... it couldn't hurt to get them replaced anyway just in case.

it's definitely not normal...and is a sign of poor voltage regulation from the power source, cable or phone

I never said it was normal, just that it might go away same as it did to me and a few others who had this problem.

Multiple cables same result. It happened the very first time I charged it out of the box so I don't think it's a rom issue.

it sounds like you have determined it is not the power source or cable...I would still try rom and kernel myself but at this point it sounds like your best option is to take it in to a repair center

Just to update this thread for those who may experience this in the future: I didn't believe Evoixmrftw when he posted this, but I'm starting to believe in this theory. My charging issue does indeed seem to have gotten better over time. I still experience an occasional lag while charging but not nearly as bad as in the first couple weeks of ownership. I can't explain this, but it does seem to be the case. I'll update the thread if this changes.

:) yeah its weird, but should sort itself out eventually. Thanks for the update.

Another update: so the freezing happened again today, and now I'm thinking it may be some sort of battery conditioning issue. I swapped out for a new battery today and boom, there's my freezing problem while charging. I'll give this new battery a few more charges and see what the result is.

ive had this issue happen over and over since ive bought the phone and my sister who just bought one already asked me why it was lagging when it was charging...i wonder how many people are experiencing this and possibly just ignoring it like i did for so long...something to bring up to sprint/htc?

Well what do I know....just when I thought maybe it was getting better it's now become as bad as ever. And it's happening in multiple locations. It already sucks enough that battery life is so awful on the EVO, only for me to try to charge the damn thing and then it becomes completely unusable. Aaaaarghh...this is killing the experience for me.

I'm bringing this back to life... I've had my phone for about 9 months now and for about the first 3 months there were NO problems when plugged in and it was usable while charging but after I did my first OTA after 2.2 came out (I believe it was ..65.xx something or other) it started freezing up while charging. I just updated to the latest OTA 3.70.651.1 and was hoping to fix it but it's the same problem pretty much unusable when charging. It's actually not a problem for me as I rarely plug in my phone - I have to batteries and just swap a fully charged one for a drained one whenever I run out.

Last week on a road trip to colorado I plugged it in to a usb car charger and it was working just fine. I though maybe if you had the phone unlocked already when you plug it in it would work. It worked fine for the 14 hour drive. 4 days later on the drive home it went back to freezing up. But this makes me think about the battery maybe one battery freezes up but the other one doesnt' I will have to test that when I get home.

I'm totally stock not rooted.

I know this may not apply to your situation, but all of a sudden one day I was having the lag/charging issue that was driving me nuts. I had the charger cable clamped to my desk, and I figured out that when I remove it from the clamp it fixed the problem. It was weird, because the cable was not actually being pinched, just guided by the clamp, so I can't explain why it was doing that. It was definitely the problem though, cause if i put it back in the clamp, lag lag lag.

Maybe not the same issue, but you said it got worse, so maybe see what you changed, kink in power cable? different power cable?, etc.

I had the freezing problem only with a cheap wall charger I bought on EBay. I measured the output at 4.72 volts. Then I tried another charger that put out 5.2 volts; freezing problem was gone.
