Root How to change the startup sound and image

This is taken mostly from a thread showing how to change the startup sound and image on the LG Optimus. http://androidforums.com/lg-optimus-m/228290-metropcs-hello-hello-goodbye.html

I did this on my MetroPCS Ascend. I assume Cricket would be the same if not very similar.

1. Download and install Root Explorer (must be rooted of course.)

2. Find a compatible animation (I used http://www.vopinc.com/files/Android/GDbootanimation.zip) which will be renamed "bootanimation.zip" and an ogg sound file (I used http://www.moviesoundclips.net/tv1/tng/braincells.ogg)which will be renamed "bootStrapSound.ogg".

3. Navigate to /system/media directory using Root Explorer and copy the animation over the default file (save the default somewhere if you wish)

4. Navigate to /system/media/audio/ui directory and copy your sound file over the default file (again, save the default if you wish).

I've tested this myself and it works like a charm. No more annoying MetroPCS logo and sound. :)

Cool, but what does braincells.ogg sound like?

Problem is, I can't get root explorer, and I don't know of any free ones that work...

Any suggestions... please?

EDIT: Nevermind, I got AndRootFile, worked GREAT!
Now to find nice .ogg files...

I tried to do this using root explorer and it keeps saying cannot copy because its a read-only file. Please help i want to change the sound. I have already changed the animation. Thanks

Im lost , i change pix with an app call Boot Animation , but i cant find app call AndRootFile to change the sound

I got it straight through skyfire from a youtube vid linked in a thread here called "a video I found usefull" or similar. I'll find it in a sec. Using phandroid app so I don't know how to direct link.

Found it.
Second page in all things root about half way down I was right on the name.
Vid shows rooting process as well as boot change. check the vid description for the apk files.
*edit
Post 29 atm

I found the video to be slightly different than how it worked for me but it was easy to figure out - I hit preview then download and then it installs.

For some fun animations try the animations boot installer either from the market or the other threads vid link.
I'm running dancing bananna with the robot droid sound. The app has a bunch of available animations and will d/l and install them for you in three taps total.
Now to find one to change my .oog on demand. Maybe even auto change so it's always different.
You listening, developers?

Are any of you on cricket, I did not have a sound on boot so I just put the .ogg file in the folder, and it still does not play...

it HAS to be named

bootStrapSound.ogg

case sensitive. If it's named anything else, it wont work...

It is, I am just thinking that it was not a capability of the cricket model, because everything is where it should be...

Thank you for trying to help me out though, its apreciated
