How to get 2.1 update for the driod eris

My advice

DON'T DO IT!!!

stay with 1.5, waaaaaaaaaaay more stable.
I have 2.1 and it SUCKS!!!!!
I'm going back to 1.5 if I can.

Just my 2 cents...:):)

I disagree... There's a good chance that if your phone was/has been good and stable (i.e., no silent bug, no flakey behavior) on 1.5, that upgrading to 2.1 will not cause you more problems. Quite the contrary, you'll have a much better overall experience with 2.1 with all of the "goodies" and and options that this upgrade provides (more available apps, various bug fixes, various new features, the option to root (for some), etc). This has been mine and many others experience.

I had zero problems before the 2.1, the phone was the best thing since sliced bread, but now...not so much.

Hey if you get the update and have no problems you are 100% correct the phone is that much better, but a lot of us are having some problems is all I'm saying, I want to go back to 1.5.

Yeah, I've read through that thread also. :D

What's your HBOOT version? If you've never "leaked" and did your 2.1 update via OTA, you can revert back to 1.5 if you want.

sorry how do I check my HBOOT version? what does that tell us?

no never leaked and yes I have thought about going back to 1.5, downloaded the zip file this week..;)

You HBOOT version basically dictates whether or not you can root (and you mostly likely need to root in order to revert back to 1.5).

Here's how to find-out your HBOOT version (since you never "leaked", it is highly likely that you have one of the "good" versions of HBOOT (1.46.0000 or 1.47.0000) that would allow you root).

Also, here's a side thread regarding your 2.1 O/S version (FYI):

http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-eris/87118-reference-what-htc-rom-do-i-have.html#post825493

EDIT: you apparently can got back to 1.5 without rooting (if you have a 2.1 OTA phone untouched by a leak). Read through this thread for info: http://androidforums.com/htc-droid-eris/80361-you-may-able-go-back-1-5-2-1-ota.html. The info below still applies, but apparently root is not necessary.

If you do really want to revert back to 1.5, you're going to have to root first (I'm pretty sure--hopefully someone will correct me if I'm wrong). There are lots of threads regarding unrooting and reverting back to 1.5:

http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-eris/86620-fyi-root-re-root-root-unroot-ota-root-all.html
http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-eris/66007-rooting-eris-unrooting-eris-all-jazz.html

http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-eris/74690-root-2-1-1-5-reversion-problem-please-help.html

If you actually do decide to do this, you might want to post a new thread before you start to make sure all of the really in-the-know folks who have actually attempted this are there to help and guide you through it. Hope this helps.

P.S. who knows, maybe if you rooted, you might change your mind and not revert back to 1.5?:D:)

^thanks, I really don't want to root the phone, don't want to go down that road with my phone, just want the dam thing to work..:(

+1...I hear you and feel for you. A phone should work first and foremost as a phone. And, if you advertise its functionality as a smart phone (with apps, etc.), it should work. If it doesn't and you've documented and/or can demonstrate as such to VZW, they should remedy the situation.

Rooting is not an endeavor that should be taken lightly and I'm glad you have not.

I take it you've been down the factory reset road already? (http://androidforums.com/htc-droid-eris/80233-factory-data-reset-option.html)

gm991,

Hey, I've updated my post from above...lol, I read a thread from yesterday where you already posted (http://androidforums.com/htc-droid-...ve-12-8mb-ota-update-today-4.html#post1097898) the information about reverting back to 1.5 without having to root! :D. So, looks like you do have an easier road should you choose to follow it.

Thanks for educating me regarding this. :)

No prob man....:D thats what these boards are here for to help each other out.
See know I know I can go back to 1.5 without rooting...;)

As far as the hard re-set, yes twice...:(

But I must say getting chomp has solved one of my biggest problems with the 2.1 and thats the force close of SMS.

FInally heard nback from HTC...big surprise they told me to wait....

Dear Mr. Norander,
Hi, I am Danielle and I would be happy to assist you today. You were wondering about the software upgrade to Android version 2.1 for your HTC DROID Eris. Your Android device was released with the Android operating system (version 1.5) and the software upgrade was a recent edition back in mid May. You are welcome to check your device and find out if you can pull the upgrade to your device through the Settings screen (Home page> Menu> Settings> About Phone> System Updates). The new software is an OTA (over the air) upgrade so your Android device pulls the update from the Google server. If you do not receive the software upgrade within the next week, I would recommend you contact HTC back. I will need you to send us back some information from your device though. 1. Serial number and MEID from underneath the battery 2. ROM version or Firmware number and Build I thank you for contacting HTC and please feel free to send another email if you have any other questions. In order to improve our service, I would like to invite you to participate in a survey on the worldwide HTC website at HTC Online Survey.
To send a reply to this message or let me know I have successfully answered your question log in to our ContactUs site using your email address and your ticket number 10USCW28ENA001401.
Sincerely,
Danielle
