How to move app from sd card to phone without a file manager?

Hello all,

Im new to the forum and in need of some help.

I just rooted my hero (yes a hero lol) and deleted the gtalk app to free up space. I did this before I backed my phone up.

After I did this I became unable to download apps from the market. It gets stuck at "starting download".

I did a factory reset hoping this would resolve the problem but it did not. So basically now I have no file manager app or any way to get one from the market.

I did find and download the gtalk apk file to my computer and transfered it to my sd card. Now I just need a way to get the file from my sd card to my phone.

Ive searched but cant find exact instruction on how to move an apk file from my sd card to my phone without the use of a file manager app.

Does anyone know how to acomplish this? Any help would be much apprieciated.

Can you just email/text/mms the file (or link if you use Dropbox) to your phone? After it downloads, go to your notification area and you should be able to install it (make sure you set the option to Allow Unkown Sources in Menu/Settings/Applications)

You could try this line with your phone's browser ...

file:///sdcard/<your apk file name>

EDIT: ... assuming that your apk file is in the root of SD card.
But you can put in any other folder path.

You could also try logging into the market from a PC. Then choose a file explorer there and see if it starts installing on your phone.

I tryed logging into the market from my pc and clicking install for a file manager but my phone never downloaded the app I selected.

You should have an icon called Internet.

Ok!!!!! You guys are great!!!

Used the phones browers to install the gtalk apk file. Rebooted and my phone started downloading all the apps Ive been trying to download since i deleted gtalk.

Glad to hear you got it working. Lesson learned.

Always do a Nandroid backup before deleting files. That was you have a backup to restore if something goes wrong.
