HTC Desire 320 sits on boot up screen

The phone is not rooted. To the knowledge of the owner it hasn't gone under any updates.

It powers up to the HTC start screen and just sits there forever.

When pressing volume up + volume down + power it goes to "no command screen". If you press after that the power button it goes into recovery.

Already tried cleaning the cache from recovery, also a factory reset, rebooting the device and again that white screen of death.

I can't seem to access safe mode, or don't know the correct key combination.

Any suggestions for a newbie are greatly appreciated!
