Root Misc Partition Help

Somniferum

Can anyone upload or send me an .img of their Misc partition? Somehow mine has gotten corrupted. Moto Droid 1 on FRG22D, rooted.

Or if you have another solution to this problem, I'm all ears. When I boot into Clockwork Recover, I get the following error:

E:Can't read MISC:
(No space left on device)

Thanks in advance!

Never heard of that error. Can you just flash back to the stock recovery? If going back to stock recovery doesn't work I will pull a completely stock misc partition for you tomorrow sometime

I did a full restore from backup and I'm still getting that error. It appears that Clockwork Recovery's backup doesn't include that particular partition. I know, I'm always the one to get some bizarre error. :P Anyway, if you could pull a stock misc partition when you have time I would be very thankful. :)

The funny thing is, during the wipe/factory reset process I got that same error again:

E:Can't read MISC:
(No space left on device)

Seems like a catch-22 situation.

Only thing you flashed was recovery partition using flash_image right?

Worst case scenario if nothing else works maybe you can just use RSDLite and flash a recovery SBF?

Right ... and I never could get the recovery image OMJ posted to flash properly, and after that the old 2.0.1 recovery wouldn't flash either, so I ended up installing ROM manager and flashing Clockwork Recovery because I didn't want to be going around without a recovery option in place. That's when my problems with the Misc partition started. Weird thing is, other than the error message about it, my phone actually works fine.

My wife has a Droid also, so in theory I could create an image of her Misc partition and flash it over mine. Problem is, I can't get any of the Linux commands to work. I have tried the following under su:

dd if:/dev/misc > /mnt/sdcard/misc.img
dd if:/dev/misc > /sdcard/misc.img
dd if:/dev/mnt1 > /mnt/sdcard/misc.img
dd if:/dev/mnt1 > /sdcard/misc.img
dd if:/mnt/mnt1 > /sdcard/misc.img
dd if:/mnt/misc > /sdcard/misc.img

None of the above works. Anyone have the correct syntax?

Thanks for the idea ... I did exactly that and it fixed the problem! RSD Lite put me back at stock 2.1, so I downloaded Universal Androot and re-rooted, installed ROM Manager, flashed Clockworkmod Recovery, and restored a nandroid backup that I made just before. So now I'm back exactly like I was but without the annoying Misc problem. Whew! :)

Good to hear!

Sounds to me in the end you've found it's worth it to have a custom recovery for nandroid backups. I might reconsider my stance on no custom recovery :)

I have to say, this whole experience has changed my views somewhat on customization. Now that I've seen how easy it is to restore from nandroid backups, and even to get back to stock using RSD Lite, I'm a lot more comfortable with the idea of customizing things. My other issue was the ambiguity of being out of synch with the official updates, but that's been somewhat nullified as well by the fact that FRG22D is likely the last update we'll get for the Droid, at least for a long while. I understand Gingerbread will only be officially supported on 1Ghz+ devices, which means the only way we'll ever see it on the Droid is via a custom ROM anyway. ;)

I'm currently trying out this Smoked Glass ROM which is based on FRG22. I was able to install it without wiping data. It also features a low voltage kernel that allows overclocking up to 1.1Ghz (though I doubt I'll feel the need to push it quite that far).

Good times!

Sorry I never got around to pulling that misc partition. I had to help someone move and it took my entire weekend. Glad to see you got things worked out.

No problem ... I think I've learned more about my phone this weekend than in the whole 7 months since I got it, so it's all good. :p

Just wanted to update you guys. Running rooted FRG22D from OTA update, still my own "stock" version.

High level steps were that I manually "fixed" the official OTA update.zip to preserve my root access, and installed it using sprecovery (flashed using ROM Manager).

Do you think you could tell me step-by-step exactly what you did to fix this. I have the exact same problem. And when my phone reboots, the apps that I have stored on my sd card don't show up and are not accessible. I think this might have something to do with that problem.

Thanks!
