Help MP3 file as Notification / Ringtone

Hi all,

Hope you can help me. I got my new phone this morning and am really pleased with the Samsung Galaxy W, but I've ran into a 3 issues, they may all be related which is why I've got them all on one post.

I'm trying to set an MP3 file as a text message tone and one as a ringtone. But I can't work out how to do it. I've looked about on this forum and I've found a post which said where to the put the file, but I still can't seem to do it. I've got the notification file in the following location:

Computer\GT-I8150\Phone\media\Audio\Notifications

Just in case it's a file size issue, the details of the file are as follows:
Name - babylaugh.mp3
Size - 235 KB
File length - 13 seconds

The doesn't show on the list of available notifications.

Problem 3
I've put some songs from my computer onto the phone and I can navigate to them going through Applications -> My Files. But when I go into the Music App, the added files don't show.

Anyone have ideas where I'm going wrong with these problems?

Hi

You have copied the mp3 file the same as me so I can't understand why it does not show in the notifications list.
If you navigate to the file on the phone using Applications/My Files/Media/Audio/notifications and then select the mp3 file, then press the menu key do you get an option 'Set as'? if you do you can set the file as Phone ringtone, Caller ringtone or Alarm tone from here.
Another way is to copy the file to your phone and then using the phone move the file to the notifications folder.
eg. go to Applications/My files/ and select the folder you put the file in, then press the menu key/more/move and select the file and press move. go to media/audio/notifications and press, 'move here'. Now check to see if the file shows up in notifications, hopefully it does and you can set it as your tone.

This is how I transfer music to my phone and get it to show up in Music.

If you copy the album as a folder it does not show up in 'Music' on the phone, (don't know why) so copy the individual tracks to Computer/GT-I8150/Phone/Samsung/music and they should show up in the list on the phone.

OK Guys, Hi there......

For user Notifications and Ringtones, you need separate folders in

/sdcard/media/audio folder:

notifications and ringtone in separate folders

On your device, if you are still using My Files, just browse to the media/audio folder, tap the Menu Softkey

tap Create Folder, and type in ringtones, if you don't already have it. (Also, check in the notification folder that your mp3 is there!!)

So, I show you my notifications folder, with a large mp3 file, copied from elsewhere, (OK it's John Fogerty....The Old Man Down the Road.mp3):

Now, showing you this mp3 as Notification in Settings/Sound settings/Notification ringtone:

Same with Ringtones:

What are you using to transfer the mp3 files, you seem to be connected by USB to your PC??

Also, IMHO, you should ditch My Files

for a decent free File Manager, like ES File Explorer:

Thanks for this guys I spent all last night looking of this info and was starting to think that the notifications were fixed .One very happy W owner .

Thank you so much for this dannymur. I have spent DAYS trying to get away from the rubbish/quiet default notification tones! I had given up hope of ever knowing when I had received a text again (or at least for the length of this contract)! I doubted all the while I was creating new folders and moving files to your instructions (me of little faith) but did you hear my SCREAM when it worked. I have also downloaded the file manager you suggested. Thank you thank you thank you

Just got this phone, but I had the good olde ZTE Blade b4, and did a lotta work in the forum here for that phone.

Oh how I miss it, my son has it now

now, I try to get used to wierd Sammy stuff, like internal "USB/SD" storage, external "real" SD, under /mnt/sdcard/external_sd

.......and the fact that Samsung have taken for their own use about 100MB of our 512MB RAM...for their useless TouchWiz stuff

However, do not despair, there is hope, on XDA, Devs are now producing custom ROM's which beat the socks of the wasteful Samsung Stock ROM's.

And, despite Samsung, we will have ICS.

if you are trying to add ringtones to the ringtone folder in "Settings" on the Samsung Note, root a file on the SD card called "Ringtones" add your own ringtones (in MP3 format) then shut down the phone. After waiting approx 10 sec re-boot and your ringtones will appear where they are supposed to be. Then its just a matter of setting your contact to their own tones. WOOHOO.
Took me a while to figure it out but its the re-boot that puts your ringtones in 'Settings" where they belong and not in the media app.

I also noticed one another reason this may not be working for some people.. Length of the song name or Underscores and spaces Cause I tried this with a song that had a underscore between the Artist and song name and It wouldn't show up in the notification selection but when I changed the name to just the song name it worked.

I have a Samsung Gio S5660, and had the same problem with transferring MP3 downloaded ringtones, and have them show up under ringtones. For this phone, and perhaps other Samsungs, it was simply a matter of creating a "ringtones" sub-folder in the download folder, and moving MP3 files there. Once done, they became selectable as ringtones under phone settings.

Good advice made it easier to get started. Thanks.
