Multiple Questions for little project

Dear All,
I have an HTC Hero from Orange, which I no longer use for voice calls in general.

I wan't to do the following:

1. SIM unlock it and use a 3G PAYG Data sim
2. Turn the Hero into a WIFI hotspot (MIFI style)

How would I go about doing this? The firmware is 2.1-update1

Thanks for all your help!

All very doable.

(1) Pay orange for an unlock code (or take a chance with one of those fly by night websites).

(2) Root and install a custom ROM - pretty much all of them will have wireless tethering capability. There are apps on the market which will do wireless tethering without root (e.g. widgetsoid), but IIRC they all require at least android 2.2.

Thanks! If I may ask, are they any recommended unlockers? Do I unlock first and then root? Will I have to downgrade and then root? Would be most grateful if you can point me to the latest guides, most seem to be for the earlier firmware!
Thank you once again.

No idea which unlockers to use, i'd suggest trying orange as a first port of call - they may well unlock it for a small fee.

Aye, 20 quid (and some small change) with no exceptions even if your handset is 6mths out of its contract and you've just upgraded to a new 18mth deal with them. Needless to say I politely declined their kind offer.

I contacted HTCCode after seeing them recommended by several members here, and had my Hero unlocked within 15mins of requesting the code. Cost was less than 13 notes, paid via PayPal.

Thanks a lot for all the support, will keep you posted on how it goes, so that it may help others if they have a similar idea :-)
