Need help

I'm one of those guys that had a friend root my phone and have had problems and kick myself for not having learned to do it. I have been trying to hold out for an upgrade and was planning to learn everything then and root it. Of course with the EVO 3D on the horizion, my phone crapped out on me again.

I'm stuck on the white HTC screen. The phone locked up while reading text messages but had performed flawlessly for the past 6 months. What do I do from here, I know it can be booted into recovery mode, but I'm unsure of how to proceed from there. I have had fresh and now have CM6 on it. I'd like to reroot it or reload it, whatever it takes to get it up and running again. I do kow the sd card is partioned and I believe he said some of that memory is used for the phone. I have a second sd card that is unpartioned and I have never understood the gain from partioning it, but live and learn. I am not opposed to upgrading to a different rom and read of the cm7 I believe it was. I like the features of the phone, just hated the lag and love the ability to wireless tether it.

The last time it went sour, the sd card went bad, but the card is still readable as of now.

Thank you for any assistance.

Well we need to know if your SD card is working, what I would do if you are willing to try a few things, first thing I would do is boot into recovery and wipe cache and davlik, and then reboot the phone, see if that resolves your issue, if not the next step I would do is try flash AOSP GB Rom and we can walk you through that process, but try the first option and report back, to boot into recovery is simple, with the phone powered off, then hit the home button and the end key at the same time, that should get you into recovery, if that doesn't, then with phone off hold the volume down button and end key at the sametime for 2 seconds, then when prompted hit the home key to get into recovery.

The phone brought up a screen asking to delete data by pushing the action key. Nothing happened until I tried the no key and then back to the htc white screen.

The volume key and power got me into the recovery screen. I'm not quite sure what the cache and davlik wipe parts are.

Edit, I found and wiped the davlik cache. I read some and did the wipe data factory reset.

I rebooted the phone and it is slowly loading itself back up.

Thank you very much as the phone is now working and just have tonget it se up. I appreciate the help and thank you for the information I learned.

Another question though, what would cause something like this to happen?

You didn't need to do a full wipe, if that is what you did, now you will have to set the whole phone up again, if that is what you did, usually a simple Cache and Davlik cache solves the issue, and if you did wipe, I assume you didn't do a Nandroid back up

For future learning, how is cache wiped?

Should this be a regular maintenance type of thing?

The phone wiped back to when cm6 was installed. Wasn't a big deal as everything was backed up, maybe two hours off and on to get it back to where it was.

If you have CWM recovery then it is simple, boot into recovery, and then you wipe cache partition, then you scroll to advance and wipe Davlik. Here is an image of the recovery screen for CWM
