Root New DHD want to root, goldcard required?

Hi guys, just moved on from owning a desire to a dhd. Only had it for about an hour and i want to root and flash a custom rom onto it. Just a few questions though.

The phone is sim free and not locked to any network and it is running 2.2.1. Now i know that i am going to have to downgrade it first but will i need to create a goldcard first?

software number is 1.72.405.3

you shouldn't need to, as far as i'm aware they're only for de-branding a phone

I rooted to cm7 a few weeks ago and I didn't create a gold card. I followed the instructions here:

cheers guys, ive done perm root using visionary. soon i'll have a custom rom on it. Is CM7 based on android 2.3 and does it come with sense? i want a stable custom rom w/o sense bogging it down, any ideas on what to go for?

They can also be used to downgrade from an unrootable firmware, if that's what your phone comes with.

CM7 is based on gingerbread and doesn't come with HTC Sense. It's what I'm running at the moment and I haven't had any issues with it.

Guys i'm just about to install cm7 and want to do a nandroid backup, am i right in thinking all i have to do is go into rom manager and select backup current rom or from the recovery select backup? Once i've done this, is it okay to CM7

I've not installed a new ROM yet, but as far as I'm aware, that is all that is needed

well i've rooted and flashed CM7 to a 9 hour old phone;-). Thanks guys.

Loving CM7, can't get enough of switching the screen on and off to see that tv off animation LOL.

I remember there being a no ads app for rooted phones but can't seem to find it, anyone heard of it?

Need a bit of help guys. The low speaker volume on the DHD is really bugging me, the DSP manager in cm7 does nothing. I tried applying the DHD DSP manager found on xda through recovery hoping this would work, but it doesn't install the zip, it says installation aborted, anyone know how to fix this?
