Root Oh lawd...head is spinning...help on rooting 2.1v3

So I need a few questions answered.

i am following this thread to Root my phone: [WORKING] ROOT for all Eris' - xda-developers

If I follow it to a T, and install Evil Eris 3.0...will I automatically get ROOT.

I am getting so confused because I see threads saying I should add recovery first ([Recovery] [17-Mar-2010] RA-eris-v1.6.2 - xda-developers), then root, then install a rom, etc....

I am a noob at this if that wasn't obvious, but I want to make sure I do this the correct way.

Should I just follow the tutorial from the first link, and all will be good? Will I be able to overclock, etc... once I have Evil Eris on my phone?

ok..but it goes into talking about Amon's recovery, etc.. I have that recovery img file on my sdcard, but I haven't run it yet. How? I assume this has to run FIRST before I even try to root my phone correct?

Nope it does not have to run first, if you follow the instructions in the link i gave you it'll be rooted easy.
