One Character Per Line Typing Problem in Message App

In my default text messaging app, I noticed three faint dots in the text box and ever since then when I type a message, it splits into one character per line until I press Send. Example:

s

How do I correct this? I would like to avoid a factory reset of my phone but I've tried changing all the relevant settings to no avail.

Install a different text message app from the play store

What messenger app and keyboard are you using? Seems like a setting somewhere got clicked...

also try wiping cache for the app. i would also recommend wiping data, but that will erase all of your conversations unless you back them up using something like sms backup in the play store.
