Help Preventing stock apps from updating

When I came out of work this afternoon and turned on my LG Optimus V (stays off in the car during work), my device was buried is a series of stock applications auto updating (and running out of space). At least half of them are simply not used. On this device, updates to stock apps take significantly more space than updates to my installed apps. So, the device immediately ran out of space and left the notification bar full of garbage to clean up, and I had to uninstall all the stock app upgrades. Is there any way to block them, or at least, just send a notification like other apps?

Go into the Android Market, hit the Menu button and choose My Apps, then find the apps. Click each one and uncheck the "update automatically" box.

Yeah, real nice.
Nothing but crap and over 20 percent of my available phone memory disappeared.
!!! BEAUTIFUL !!!

May I add to "DaMan" instructions?

On your phone go into the Android Market, hit the Menu button on your phone and choose My Apps, then find the apps. Click each one, scroll down and uncheck the "update automatically" box. Rinse and repeat as necessary.

...or if you use Appbrain (which I can highly recommend), you can tell it to never update certain apps. It won't even notify you of future updates. I have Where, Twydroid, etc on that setting.

This does not work for some of the stock Android apps, such as Google Maps, Market, and Gmail. They'll update whether you untick those boxes or not.

I was using the AppBrain trick and that did stop it for a little while, but Fast Web Installer is buggier than hell so I uninstalled them both.

No use, the droid overlord is forcing these stupid updates. My phone freaks up when it gets below 17Mb, so instead of receiving texts, it forces updates when I'm down till 4Mb. Thus leaving me textless until I clear all the update. This then repeats. Over. And Over. And Over. Again.

You're not supposed to overload your phone like that with so many apps as the phone isn't intended to be that full. You're causing your own issues there. :(

Best thing you can do for your phone is remove some of those apps so that your phone isn't struggling, and be sure to leave some room for those irritating updates that Google likes to force on us.

I noticed it updated a lot of apps on my Android too. All of a sudden this morning like 5 updates were pushed through. Now I too have 20% less memory. So annoyed!

Those updates were from Android, so addressing your complaints to Google would be where you might see results.

If the memory is there I feel like it's meant to be used. lol. But personally, I filled up the entire internal memory the first day I had it...

I'm looking at my app list by size right now, everything possible to be moved to the SD moved, of course:

(Used to have Google+ installed but it literally took 14 MB after moving to SD)

Maps - 11.05 MB
Facebook - 8.14 MB
Market - 7.89 MB
Music (Beta) - 7.68 MB
Browser - 6.41 MB
Docs - 5.01 MB
Voice Search - 4.81 MB
SoundHound - 4.23 MB
Youtube - 3.73 MB
Adobe Reader - 3.70 MB
Gmail - 3.60 MB
Angry Birds - 3.04 MB

A lot of those are built-in or system apps... And they're taking so much space. I only have like 150 or so apps installed. And that's after finding alternative applications that take up less space on the internal drive. I keep having to remove apps that are important to me just to get updates. If I had known this phone had such space issues I would have rooted the first day I got it.

I'm still looking in to rooting my phone, since I know if I had the extra space I'd easily fill 10x as much space as is available on the stock phone. I still don't know much about it, though, and I'm trying to make sure I can find a rooting method that keeps my Android 2.2.1 rom, phone number, settings, apps, etc...

Anyways, I'm a gamer and I always love to get the most out of my hardware. So I've got a lot of processor intensive and memory heavy 3D games as well. But I feel like 30 games shouldn't be enough to fill up the major portion of the internal storage that it does :P I would easily download 100 more games in a day if the space was available.

But I feel like I've gotten to the point where I'm repeating myself XD... On a side note, if anyone knows how to root the V while keeping my settings/apps/2.2.1 version, PM me and let me know.

TLDR.

Not really something that's debatable if you have PEBKAC.

No need to be rude. You're acting like I'm computer illiterate. I'm a 3rd year CS major at my local university... lol

I'm just saying, I use a lot of stuff. I didn't consider rooting at first, so after downloading 150+ apps on the first day my phone filled up quickly.

And you still filled up all of the space on your phone with apps? I'm sorry if I was rude, but I gotta poke fun at you... just a little.

o_O I don't understand why it's so hard to believe that I filled a mere 140 MB. I haven't rooted yet because I haven't bothered to look in to it. But anyways, like I said, a ton of games still take up a MB or more after moving to the SD card and 150 apps can easily take up that much space. If anything, it shows how enthralled I was with my new device because I spent the time to find the apps that are useful to me quite quickly. lol

This is coming from a guy who filled his 500 GB hard drive in a few months, got a terabyte external for more space, and had that nearly filled within a few more months. I'm considering purchasing another 1TB external... xD... I guess I'm a data hog. But I love me some games.

We're both trying to convey two different points. I in fact am referring to what ho_ stated about his phone acting up because it has 4mb of space left.

I don't find it hard to believe at all that you overfilled your phone. The thing is is that I don't know why you would do it. It's like eating food. If you eat too much yer gonna puke. If you put more apps on the phone than it was designed to handle, the phone is not going to function efficiently (hence my reply to ho_). Why anyone would do that on purpose is what I don't understand.

There is no doubt there are huge advantages to changing the ROM. I just wanted to ensure that the user knew that he/she could benefit from root without a ROM change. When I first started reading up on everything I assumed a ROM change was necessary when rooting. After a bit more investigation I understood I could root without changing my ROM to fulfill my immediate need of additional storage and backup capability. This lead to root using GingerBreak, Clockworkmod recovery using ROM Manager. This of course allowed me to utilize Link2SD to increase my space and Titanium Backup. On a side note I also installed xtr50fix to take care of the annoying airplane mode gig when I boot.

Sorry, I took your advice, but it didn't prevent the apps from updating again, including one called Soundback, which wasn't on the device before.
So, I'm still looking for a solution.

I didn't do anything I haven't done on ANY computer/pda/other device I've had in the last 34 years. I bought it (not licensed it), it doesn't belong to Virgin, LG, or Google. If they were so all fired up to force updates, where is THAT in their advertising or manual? They could have loaded their apps in memory originally, so updates could overlay old versions. Or, they could have supplied a new ROM (misnomer) image like my now ancient PDA, GPS, and CD player (still in use)
This thing is eating my data connection, along with my memory.
I was planning to wait until the warranty was over to root this device. But, if I can't stop this garbage, I will be rooting it a lot sooner.
My list of apps is only 39: and all I can are moved to my 16gb microSD card. A significant chunk of each stays in the delivered memory.
