Help Reception is horrible, what should I do?

Well hello everybody. I received my Droid X not too long ago, maybe 15 days or something. I figured my issue should have cleared itself, but I guess its not a problem to wait out.

So lets get down to it. My VZW reception is horrible. My 3G drops to 1X constantly, sometimes even drops altogether. I only have 1 bar normally, 2 if I get lucky. 3 once in a blue moon, but never 4. Calls have never been dropped though, so atleast they stay true to their marketing. However, I know this is a drain on my battery.

So I've tried switching my hand positions on the phone, that didn't work. I know it shouldn't really affect anything, but it was worth a shot. Tried holding it upright rather than horizontal, nothing with that either.

Updating my roaming capabilities seems to work for maybe a minute. I can hit 3 bars when I do that, but afterwards, it'll drop down back to 1 or 2.

I live in upstate New Jersey, so I'm pretty close to NYC. I figured this would help my signal reception since its a major location, but I guess not. Anybody have any suggestions? Is this a known issue or something?

EDIT: Did a speedtest just for fun. .32mbps down, .47 up. Atleast officially my upload speed is higher than my download speed.
