The instructions are to flash it via Odin. You can't really flash a recovery via a recovery.

If it helps, this is what I did:

Follow these instructions and install Reverb Clockworkmod Recovery Test 8.

This will install an older version of clockworkmod.

Once installed, you can boot into recovery and install v6.0.3.0.

I did flash cwm 8, it worked.
I then flashed a custom cwm and some custom ROMS, I found one that's awesome. I got it from Android area 51, along with some nicely modded apps.:thumbup:

I like the work they do, and how fast they are to help with problems, so I donated and got VIP privileges and access to exclusive releases. :thumbup::thumbup:

Hello Peoples! I bring y'all CWM Touch Recovery! I can't take credit because all I did was build it using ClockworkMod builder and Interloper's recovery.fstab & graphics.c files so credit goes to him & Koush.​

i have successfully rooted my device i just want to install any custom recovery so i can un-install tuchwiz (hate it) i want to install plain jelly bean. any help would be great
what i have done so far:
root: yes
install custom recovery: working on that
flash a custom rom: not there yet

You can use the cwm recovery in this thread, using the method outlined here -

If you are still using ICS, and want to upgrade to Jellybean, you may want to allow the JB update to happen, and then re-root using the same instructions in the thread I linked to.

If you want to not use Touchwiz, you can also just use a different home launcher app such as Apex Launcher, and you can freeze Touchwiz with Titanium Backup (don't freeze it until you've installed another launcher though)

Are you holding down volume up + power buttons to boot into recovery?

anyways i would rather have cwm recovery, but thats the problem everything i try wont work, it wont download the recovery i feel like i have tried everything. i put my phone into download mode, i open up odin, then i look for the .tar file, then i uncheck reboot and click start then odin says it passes, after that i unplug my phone remove the battery and press volume up then power button and it just gives me the badge of honor and then it just ignores my commands and boots to the OS. and the reason i dont like tuchwiz its because it takes up too much space and too much ram of the little i have causing my phone to lag when i haven't downloaded much things or done much with it. i rather just have a fresh plain jelly bean bloatware free and tuchwiz free.

Also are you pulling the battery as soon as Odin says "pass", or are you waiting for the little bar on your phone screen to finish filling up first?
Sorry if these questions seem silly, I'm just trying to get an idea of exactly what you tried.
Are you even able to bring up the stock recovery?

i didn't think it matter after odin says pass i just take my time to unplug the phone and remove the battery, since i unchecked auto reboot. also yes i can get to stock recovery.

but what confuses me is that when i go to download mode it says
ODIN MODE
product name: SPH-M950
CUSTOM BINARY DOWNLOAD: YES (12 counts)
CURRENT BINARY: CUSTOM

so what im thinking is that it recognized i downloaded a custom kernal, yet it doesnt go to custom recovery when i press volume up and power.

Your phone will try to reinstall the stock recovery if you can't get it to boot to the custom recovery the first time, which is why the kernel is staying but cwm isn't.
The first time I installed cwm with Odin, I actually had to do it a couple times since holding vol up + power is kind of sketchy sometimes.

still no luck i have done everything as soon as it says pass and everything and it just flashes the orange triangle and goes to the OS also i even tried auto reboot and it didn't work.
