Help remove recent calls notification

I received a call about an hour ago that I was not able to accept but since took care of the issue via texting.
The notification icon of the missed call is atop the main screen and I don't see how I can get rid of it. The "CLEAR" option is not available to me in the settings.
What's the answer?

On my phone you have to go to the dialer and look at recent calls in order for it to believe that you've really seen that you missed one.

I wish that was the answer but I've been to recent calls a half a dozen times since this nonsense started and I persist in having the notification icon. And now it is a reminder box in the center of the screen when I light up the screen.
Super annoying.

I think I stumbled on the answer. I work in a mall which, though not far from a cell tower, seems to squelch cell phone reception.
When I walked out to the parking lot I was able to get the voicemail (which I'd already handled anyway) and immediately the notification icon disappeared.
Another problem solved. Oh happy day.
