Root ROM Manager Erase Recovery Option

I have a few questions before I do something stupid.

1) What does the Erase Recovery option do in ROM Manager settings?

2) When you backup a rom using clockwork, via nandroid, or by initiating from ROM Manager, is the recovery image (IE Clockwork version 2.0.1.3) automatically backed up with the ROM? If so, does this option turn off restoring the recovery image from nandroid on a restore?
