Root Root BEFORE Wire trick ?

Ksou

Newbie
Hi all , do I need to root before the wire trick or after .

I read this off the wire trick guide

"Verify - You are on Stock RUU (not FreshROM, Stock Rooted, HarmonyROM - none of these will work!)"

Does this mean DON'T root until I'm S-OFF .

Ohh and I'm finally buying the phone this week !

Yes, that's what it means.

If already rooted you would need to flash the RUU, but if you do it right after getting the phone you can HTC unlock then go for the wire trick and root after you are S-OFF.

Really REALLY glad I read this first , see my skiping a step thread for my current plan .

MASSIVE thanks !

The three times I've done S-OFF I had been rooted already and didn't encounter any problems, most recently about a month ago. I think if you have already rooted you don't need to sweat un-rooting or anything like that.

That's probably true but you won't be able to get support from the unlimited.io staff if you don't follow their directions exactly as written. If you don't care about that you can try it any way you want but just don't plan on going to their IRC channel for help.

root is NOT required before S-OFF. The most expedient way to hack your phone is to do S-OFF, root, then OTA/HBOOT change. You could probably save rooting for 3rd if you wanted to.

My http://androidforums.com/evo-v-4g-all-things-root/695161-s-off-root-fix-everything-all-in-one.html guide walks you through the whole process.
Just to clarify a little bit, if you root first you will have to flash the OTA firmware only zip or the all-in-one file from the new "fix everything" thread since the actual OTA requires the stock recovery. If you want to install the entire OTA the best time to do it is right after flashing the RUU or unlocking the bootloader, and before getting S-OFF which updates the bootloader to the JBear version, since the stock bootloader is included in the OTA when applied as designed.
