Root Rooting an Eris without Verizon service?

Can I root my old Eris if it doesn't have Verizon service? I have upgraded to the Bionic and I would like to practice rooting the Eris before I try it on my Bionic, is this possible?

Thanks

It is possible - but the rooting methods for the Eris and the Bionic are a bit different.

It would be far better to have WiFi, as access to the market will make the process far easier. If you have a stock Eris that is asking to be activated, I believe if you start the activation and then cancel several times it will give up and allow you to access the home screens, and from there (after you set up WiFi) you can get the files that you'll need to complete the rooting process.

Again, though, I believe that the Bionic is very, very different.

Thanks for the reply.

I haven't really looked into rooting the Bionic all that much since it's a fairly new phone and I wouldn't do it till it got a little more outdated. I just wanted to mess around changing roms and not have to worry about messing up my phone.

After I activated my Bionic I realized that I wanted to look back at my Eris for something and I was able to get to the home screen and open any app that I had on it at the time I switched. I'll have to see if I can get WIFI to work on it tonight.

I have two Eris's that's not active and I use the wifi from my Incredible to do what ever I want with them. Changing rom's etc.

I think the root method for the Bionic is the djrbliss Droid 3 adb root exploit method (works on most recent Motorola phones). Its pretty simple if you are handy with the Android SDK's adb utility (I manually re-rooted my Droid X with it).

There's a few tools for rooting the Bionic that I'm pretty all use the djrbliss exploit under the hood.

There's several ways to crack the Eris rooting nut, which is surprising given how long it actually took to get it rooted in the first place. Here's a few for nostalgia's sake:

1. wag3slav3's mid.txt symlink exploit (used by the widely-used Universal 1-click and Universal Root for Dummies threads)

2. rageagainstthecage exploit (used by Z4root (don't remember if both perm and temp root work, but I got one of 'em to work a while back))

3. tereg's crazy microSD card hack (very difficult to accomplish--only 30 or so folks ever did)

4. SoSicWiTiT's RUU rom.zip exploit (using the leaked base root ROM)

5. leaked v2.1 based root ROM

Maybe more? If I remember more, I'll update ;).

Cheers!
