Root rooting basics?

Is there a "primer" of sorts to help me understand rooting, kernals, etc? If I root, would Froyo (for example) be the OS? What's a ROM? I'm currently running an unrooted 2.1 update 1 Moto Droid. Helix Launcher. I am so n00b and confused I don't even know what to search for. What's Bugless Beast (heard it talked about in a few places)? Is that the same thing as Froyo in terms of type of program? Someone help this n00blet or at least tell me how to search!

well i know a real good form u can use to help u root ect..... and i'm kinda nubish so this is what i think i know...


root-basicly gives u admin rites on ur phone.
