Help Spurious message notification in "Favorites" Widget

On my EVO 4g, the Favorites widget shows there is a message from one of my favorites (the little number indicator next to the person's picture). There is not, unless it is hiding. Where could it be hiding, so I can kill it. Or if it is an error, how can I correct it? Powering off the phone doesn't do the job.
