Root Trouble Rooting my Desire

Xtasy

Newbie
I'm stuck with unrevoked, in the middle of rooting it says:
"waiting for bootloader; make sure driver is installed"

Well, the bootloader has came up, but when nothing happens I hit the power botton over top of "Fastboot", then "Bootloader", somewhere in there I hit Hboot and it comes up with some lines about how I have no image..ect.

Finally I just reboot because I don't know what else to do.

I believe it's probably a driver issue because unrevoked can't tell that it has loaded the bootloader.

Eventually I get a message on unrevoked saying "communication with phone unexpectedly interupted. Try again."

I installed these drivers before rooting:
xda-developers - View Single Post - ADB drivers for HTC Desire?

But I think I need something else?

Also, I want to be able to keep the something similar to the stock ROM that the desire came with. I love the look of it, lol. I'm not sure I will like any others. I mainly want to root to overclock.
I might try other ROM's, but at the moment I don't see what else is that great?

Do a search for the driver name, through your computer, when its found, if it is, make sure the driver is where your walkthough says it should be. I cant remember myself.

Check also that USB debugging is ticked

No idea what driver I need, that's the problem.

USB debugging is ticked.

Left click on your own link, above. A window will appear. Right click on HTC ADB Driver, a .rar file will download. Once done extract it, and you have your driver.

Edit: That should read; Right click on HTC ADB Driver, save file as..

Take a little time to go through the procedure with the guide checking everything step by step from the beginning. If everything went OK, and you feel ready, try unrevoked again. Good luck.

Ok, after installing the driver it worked.

No I get to the ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.0.9 screen.
I get the following under the menu:

Code:
Waiting for SD Card to mount (20s)
SD Card mounted...

-- Installing: DATA:local/unrevoked-forever.zip

unrEVOked forever S-OFF patch v1.1

E:Error in /data/local/unrevoked-forever.zip
(Status 42)
Installation aborted
/tmp/recovery.log was copied to /sdcard/clockworkmod/recovery.log Please open ROM Manager to report the issue.
I kinda am stuck. I highlight "reboot system now" and hit the power botton. A Triangle with a yellow ! is shown with the Android figure. Upon hitting the power again it goes back to the previous menu.

Please help!

What are you trying to do? You're trying to S-off using unrevoked? Is it a CDMA desire?

Yes, it is I believe.
That's what it said when using unrEVOked.
"CDMA Desire detected"...

*Starting to worry

EDIT:
Ok, I'm pretty stupid. Lol. I kept hitting the power botton when I needed to hit the "middle" botton. No idea what it's called, lol. Between "Menu" and "Back".

It restarted, and is now normal. Am I rooted? :D

Its only s-off. If you have custom recovery you can still flash roms.

It says unsupported radio. The security flag (s-on) is in the radio NVRAM. Maybe there is a newer version of the patch?

What carrier are you? USCC? CDMA means no Sim card.

I don't have a custom recovery I don't guess.

I'm not sure, it was auto trying to patch, I did nothing.

I am on Bluegrass Cellular. Upon restart I do have service and everything seems fine like before.

Does this mean I am rooted? I don't need a custom rom. I like the original.

Have you got the super user app in your app drawer?

If you're rooting and not going to use a custom rom, what are you rooting for?

Unrevoked flashes clockworkmod custom recovery

I see "Superuser Permissions" in there, yes. :)

To overclock/underclock, I may however use another rom soon though.

Ohh...

So, can I get SetCPU and use it?

You can get set cpu but you cannot overclock without a custom kernel which allows it. You can underclock however.

Custom kernels which can be flashed separately from ROMs exist. You can find links to a few (and their discussion threads) at Desire Index - Everything Desire is here! [UPDATED: 18/12] [Avaritia HD/Baadnwz DHD] - xda-developers.

Do make sure you only try to flash something which is compatible with your ROM, so read the threads and ask questions if unsure. I've no experience with CDMA Desires, so don't know whether they need different kernels or not.

Take a nandroid before flashing a kernel, same as you would before flashing a ROM.
And turn SetCPU off (i.e. untick the "run on boot" box) before changing kernels - you can turn it back on again once you are booted, when it can autodetect your kernel's configuration, but if you let it start on boot with your previous kernel's settings your phone might be unable to boot (I learned this the hard way, and it is one reason for doing a nandroid first).

Actually, how easy is it to just install a ROM? Lol.
I mean, I can still make it look like the default can't I? It still has all the stuff I need.

I really don't see what the big difference is.
