Help "Unfortunately" message on all apps for BRAND NEW 6P !

I got a Nexus 6P yesterday and after an automatic install of all the apps on my Google account and two Android updates - many of my apps wont run - including after a reinstall. (Play Store works)

I just get the "unfortunately xxxx has stopped" message all the time.

This affects all the third party apps and others like the Googlebar. (it does nothing! I have to start chrome to use the net). I cleared the system cache already.

I cant see how a factory reset will fix this because it is brand new!

I can find lots of discussion on previous Nexus models - but not the 6P)
