Root Unlocking VM Restrictions on BT Profile for Mot Triumph

droid6

Newbie
New User - looking for help. Just purchased a Mot Triumph for use with VM prepaid plan. But found it would not connect to either my BT-enabled car stereo or PC. (My old Mot phone V710m is able to pair/connect just fine but it's old). So when I called VM Android tech support, they confirmed that VM restricts BT to the Headset Profile (HSP?) due to "copyright restrictions" which seems ridiculous.

What could solve this problem? rooting? upgrading to later version of Android? I'm about to try to return it if necessary. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

PS: This thread was copied from Android Lounge to here at suggestion of Gmash (thanks). Don't know if I can move a thread.

CyanogenMod7? Somebody more experienced needs to confirm that. I have flashed mine to CM7, but mine wouldn't stop rebooting when it had the default VM Android OS on it.

I don't have BT on my PC or car stereo, but I know others have been able to use it just fine. In fact BT tethering was the first way that wireless tethering was set up on CM7, so I know it works with a PC. I thought it worked fine with a car/PC on stock as well, but I can't test that.

p.s. Just report your original post (in the Android Lounge) by hitting the report button at the bottom left under your name, and ask for it to be deleted.

I have bluetooth in my car. I stream Pandora, Use the MP3 player, My Orb, watch videos(when parked). It works fine with the Triumph both on the stock rom and custom roms including CM7 and MIUI. Maybe you have a defective phone?

yeah that is weird. the only thing i have paired is my ps3 controller i am pretty sure that was when i had cm7 installed. never tried it with stock though. i only had stock on my phone for about 45 minutes lol

Well apparently we all have mixed reults here...lol

I've tried bluetooth on my MT numerous times with the stock OS ROM to no avail. My car has an aftermarket head unit with Bluetooth capabilities, my Optimus V that I had before this worked 100% fine, no matter what ROM I had on it at the time. Then I got my Motorola Triumph....by far my worst decision to date with a phone.

Sure, they brag about its 4.1 inch touchscreen, front VGA camera, 1 GHz Snapdragon GPU processor, WiFi, Flash Player, camera flash, 5 MP rear camera, GPS, this and that, but when you hear them say "Bluetooth" it's just another item in the list, nothing to be taken too lightly....or too seriously, either. They CLAIM it can do all of these, but IMO most of the listed features are a bunch of bullshit at best. My GPS has NEVER worked. Not once. Some "smartphone"...the phone bogs down more than my 600 MHz OV, the processor could use a bit more work. WiFi is buggy at best. I feel like I have a phone that was prematurely thrown onto the store shelves in the middle of things, as if by some pressing release date or something. There's just too much to list wrong with this thing, I'd take it back If I hadn't already installed a custom ROM, CWM recovery, bootlogo, splash screen, the whole nine yards....Best Buy would have a field day with that :p

But here's a testament to Motorola's shitty mass production principles right here: Half the people here have functional Bluetooth, the other half don't. Some have GPS, others don't. Some can get their phone to direct them to the White House, others can't even send a text to their girlfriend right next to them...

$299.99+TAX down the drain IMO... :(

The Stock ROM is definitely half-baked. Try reflashing CM7 Reloaded ROM, it fixes a lot of issues & fairly easy to go back to stock if you decide to return it still.

The only trouble I had with the bluetooth on my stereo is when pairing I had to be sure that it was configured as a headphone not headset. My after-market stereo calls it BT phone or BT audio. If I pair it as phone, it will not stream music or audio only phone calls. But if I pair it as BT audio, music and phone calls work fine. I did have to delete all paired info and changed the device name on the MT when I repaired it as BT audio.

I took me a while to figure this out, but it kinda makes sense. I'm not saying this is your issue, but this may explain why it works for some and not for others.

Also wifi and bluetooth on at the same time causes one or the other not to work well. To be fair this was also an issue on my last phone the dinc so idk.

I guess the other phone was defective. I received a (new) MT replacement phone from VM today - and it pairs/connects with the in-dash stereo BT.

Thanks - I'll probably be doing that soon. I am still wondering about how good my reception would be around town. It seems that I get like 1 or 2 bars on this phone, whereas the other phone (and it was with US Cellular) I got all 4 or 5 bars most of the time. I think the VM (Sprint) coverage probably isn't that great, even in major metro.

I'm starting to think that the only way to get a good phone is to sign up for contract on ATT or VZ. My idea was to get the cheapest plan ($35) and use Skype when possible (that IS working with WiFi at least). By going with VM I'm already limited to major metro and Interstates. I can't report yet on GPS, but will when I get chance. Since people are upgrading their OS, perhaps they are solving their BT/GPS issues?

Don't forget VZ will pile charges on top of the $35/month plan. If you want a smartphone, you must get the data plan ($30+). Then there's texting (if you're a heavy texter) and finally all of the other fees and taxes. My sister paid somewhere around $110/month with a Droid X and that was starting with the $35 plan.

EDIT: I have an a2dp rf modulator hands free unit. It only shows up as phone. I want to stream Pandora or Google Music.

Do you happen to know if there is a way to tweak it so a current phone bluetooth comes up as BT Audio instead? I tried an app called BlueAudio. It worked, but the volume is so low even with a volume booster that it's not working well enough to suffice yet.

I am on CM7, and I have installed the updated kernel that repairs the volume I believe?

Thanks!

And it's hard to circumvent the mobile data. If you get a smart phone the mobile data is mandatory now. (supposedly) It was going to be $110 for my plan as well. I opted out within the 15 day trial period and switched to virgin. As long as I get 1 bar, my phone works great.

I did and it definitely is more useful now, but BT is still problematic - would like to examine the code or parameters.
