Help Upgrade 2.2 to 2.3 with ODIN

I am new to this forum.

I have a doubt regarding upgrade 2.2 to 2.3 with odin??

can we do this??

Before this do we need to root our phone??

Can you help me in this??

i havent done it but the video goes through every step, you dont need to root

EDIT: you may need to root and get titanium backup so you can restore all your apps and data. it probably wipes the phone but again i dont know since i havent done it

I've never flashed my phone before, but I did root it last week so I'm confident I can handle the challenge (with all the proper prepping etc).

I'm curious though - will this work on the Canadian version (I896) of the Captivate too? And would this flash it to 2.3.3 Vanilla stock? I'd love to upgrade to gingerbread but I want to make sure I know what to expect before I follow random youtube videos.

I already have Titanium Back-up. I just haven't gone any further.

Somehow I am missing where to download the three files mentioned in the video

Also have a really stupid question. When I try to get the phone into the download mode I press and hold the down volume button and power button simultaneously. I have tried this many times and have not been successful, what am I missing.
