Help USB connection problems Samsung Skyrocket --> W7

Hey folks,

I've been planning to root my phone for a bit now (for the novelty of running ubuntu, amongst other things) but have had recurring problems connecting to my computer. When I try to connect, the USB connected message flashes on and off rapidly and prevents me from mounting the phone. I have the usual USB debugging enabled,and I believe the drivers are updated, but that's always worth checking.
