Root [Verizon] Question on installing latest Verizon 4.4 update

I am having problems updating to the latest Verizon 4.4 Kitkat version on my Samsung S3. The phone was rooted and was running stock firmware. I didn't install CWM or other similar custom tools. The phone was just rooted to remove all the unwanted Samsung and Verizon junk.

I see that my knox is not tripped. It is showing 0x0 and the firmware says Samsung Official but my Software update is failing when installing. I tried unrooting using the Full unroot option in SuperSu settings but still the update is failing. When I boot the phone, I still see the "Custom" unlock icon. I don't know why this icon will show up even after fully unrooting and if Samsung Knox is not tripped. Any help will be greatly appreciated. I can provide more details if you need. Thanks.

Hello there and welcome android_user_82:)

So you still have the stock recovery and kernel?
What version are you currently on?
And what method of root did you use?

Yes..! I am still on stock recovery and kernel.

Model: SCH-I535 (Verizon)
Android ver: 4.3
Baseband: I535VRUCNC1
Kernel: 3.0.31

This is what I see when I get into the download mode

Custom Binary Download: No
Current Binary: Samsung Official
System status: Custom
Qualcomm secureboot: Enable
Warranty Bit: 0
Bootloader AP SWREV: 1

I didn't update anything except rooting the phone to remove Samsung junk...but after seeing the other post above, I realized I had not deleted them but deactivated it so tried reactivating everything which might be remotely linked to an update but still no luck.

I don't remember what method I used for rooting. My laptop crashed and I lost all the saved links and files. I believe as I am on 4.3 with KNOX, I can't load a different recovery and flash the stock ROM just to make sure everything is same as default so I feel like I am stuck. What I don't understand is why is the system status showing as Custom even when Knox is at 0x0?

I was in the same state as you and was not able to get the OTA update. I was able to update via Kies.
then my GPS stopped working. Re-rooted with towel root, did something wrong and soft bricked my phone. still not working.
Not that you will have my bad luck, but you may try removing all the suggested files and using Kies.

Thanks Seal10. I was able to successfully update to 4.4.2 using Kies. I was fortunate enough to have all the features working normally. When I go to download mode after the update I see that the System Status now says "Official". This was earlier showing up as "Custom". Also the lock symbol which was coming up when I was booting the phone doesn't come up anymore. Hopefully this thread will help anyone running into the same problem again.
