where are ringtones stored

I want to transfer ringtones from my SD Card to my phone. Does anyone know what folder the default ringtones are stored in? I am using a SIII

SD card > media > audio > ringtones, is the default, but they don’t have to be there.

I cannot access these ringtones when I try to change my email notification sound...it only lets me see the default tones...

On my phone, the default ringtones are at System > Media > Audio > Ringtones. Not on the SD card. You may have to copy them there.

Not sure if you have to be rooted to copy them there or not.

IF you have to be rooted, you'll probably need a file manager that allows you to change the directory from read only to read/write. Root Explorer is one such program. There may be a free one that does this too. Not 100% sure if you need that. Can someone else chime in and verify?

Edit: Root Browser Lite says it allows for changing file permissions and ownership but doesn't specifically mention changing directory permissions. Might be worth looking into regardless.

If you're just wanting to try some custom ringtones or notifications, make a couple new folders on your SD card:

Notifications
Ringtones

First letter needs to be capitalized as above. The files placed in those folders should then become options, along with all the stock files, whenever you select a notification/ringtone.
