X10 is getting the update. We are not.

Sony Ericsson has confirmed and announced that the X10 phone will recieve Android upgrades (Gingerbread) at the end of Q2 or early Q3 this year. Unfortunately, X10 mini, X10 mini pro and X8 users are left out.

As written on Sony Ericsson's blog:
Will you upgrade the XperiaTM X10mini, mini pro and XperiaTM X8 to 2.3?
No, we have no such plans. We have had to prioritize our resources and have therefore focused on delivering the upgrade to XperiaTM X10.

Update on Xperia

LOL So what's new really?! :-P
I must admit that I liked the "We re listening to what consumers want" quote though! Oh,the irony is obvious 1000%! :-D

SONY Ericsson's annual income is in the red with net income losses since 2009. Sony Ericsson sales figures for Quarter 2 2010 shows a real significant decline (reference: SONY Ericsson Financial Report 2010).

SONY Ericsson is all about phone sales and profits to survive now... there is little a consumer can do to change this corporate behaviour. So desperate they would cannibalize their own SONY PSP market with their Xperia PLAY android phone. SONY Ericsson will react only when consumers stop buying their phones. Nokia and RIM (Blackberry) are the best examples of this type of corporate behaviour.

Who will buy their new phones... Xperia arc, Xperia pro, Xperia neo & Xperia PLAY if their old phones (release dated chronologically) X10 mini, X10 mini pro, X8 & X10 are updated to 2.3 Gingerbread?

Xperia X10 2.3 Gingerbread update is a "kill 2 birds with one stone - lowest developmental cost" ROM
Update X10 - X10 mini and X10 mini pro gets updated as well (i.e. same build).
X8 is left out as it is a different build (i.e. more development cost required to build 2.3 ROM for X8).

The good news is both racht and jerpelea over @ XDA are making great strides with 2.3 Gingerbread ROMs for Xperia X8.

You can now use racht's Floyo-0.15 ROM to update your Xperia X8 to Android Floyo 2.2, it is very stable and everything works.

Sooner or later... Android Gingerbread 2.3 ROM for Xperia X8 will be ready!

cheers :)

I think the mini's are not being updated either as they are more akin to the X8 than the X10. But your point is well made, its all about money and the company was in very bad shape last year and has still got a long way to go.

Too little too late as far as i am concerned. Would never buy another Sony Ericsson phone after this one. I just don't trust them, and their website support is appalling.

I hate my X10, and still have another year to put up with it, seriously thinking about just using my G1 again until I can upgrade to an HTC next year.

Hi Prof,

Android Eclair 2.1 is a bit of a pain to use, but your Xperia X10 will get 2.3.3 Gingerbread by summer 2011.

Android 2.3.3 will be great on a large screen (Xperia X10i) phone! I am using the 2.3.3 Gingerbread ROM on my X8 and I am happy.

cheers :)

I feel your pain, I WILL NEVER BUY A SONY ERICSSON AGAIN. but the HTC is worse, if you can believe it, I only have used the X8 and my old HTC, but the HTC is pure slop. Wish I could make a sugestion as to what to buy, i'm thinking a gun!

Well this is my first andrid phone. My first I had 7 years ago lol andit was also a sony ericsson.
So I don't really know what all these 1.6, 2.1 and so on are. Just guessing they are an upgraded version :p
It is quite annoying but I guess since the X8 was cheap it's understandable right?

Hi,

This Xperia X8 is my first android phone. Pick it up ridiculously cheap from eBay. Anyways it is not a high-end phone so I did not expect all the "bells and whistles" functions that a high end phone might provide.

Overall, it's a good phone: -
no drop calls (compared to my iPhone 4)
good battery life (I get about 1.5 days - moderate use; iPhone 4 - I only get a bout 1 day out of the battery)
good resolution display (compared to HTC Wildfire which is more expensive but lower resolution)
easy to root and install custom ROMs (compared to HTCs & Motorolas)

Look around the same price categories and you pretty much get what you paid for the X8...

cheers :)
