European Nexus One - How To Install 2.2 (FRF85B)

I may have another option with out having to unlock the bootloader. If anyone has a locked bootloader and wishes to update could you please PM me.... thanks

Here I will explain how you can install the official Froyo 2.2 (FRF85B) on your European Nexus One (Most likely you have ERF21B)

I tested this on 2 x EU Nexus One handsets, and advised another owner using the same method, which was also successful.

Now please be crystal clear about this, you will be preforming a full reinstall, you will loose any configurations you previously had, and the end result will be a fully working EU Nexus One running FRF85B. Everything works, 3G, Wi-Fi, you can even make phone calls :)

So, firstly you need to unlock your boot loader (which will show an icon of a unlocked padlock when booting)

Follow the details here: How to Unlock Bootloader and Root or Jailbreak Google Nexus One | Tito's Blog

Now we need to replace the recovery image with the following one that is listed in the first post of the following article, which also explains the installation process:

Finally we need to download the official full FRF85B file from google's servers, from here:

http://android.clients.google.com/packages/passion/signed-passion-ota-42745.dc39ca1f.zip

Copy the file "signed-passion-ota-42745.dc39ca1f.zip" to the root of you SD card, and rename it to

update.zip

NB: Windows users for god sake be sure that you do not end up with a file called update.zip.zip please !!!

Now power off your Nexus One. Boot into fastboot by holding down the tracker ball and then pressing on the power button.

Choose "BOOTLOADER" by pressing the power button.

This should then show you a screen with

*** UNLOCKED *** in the top left corner.

Press volume down, so you highlight "RECOVERY" and press the power button

You should seen the X logo with the unlocked padlock beneath, shortly followed by a triangle with an exclamation mark and a small green android to the bottom right.

Now press at the same time, Volume Up and Power Button.

You should now be presented with the

"Android system recovery <3e>" page

first, do a "wipe cache partition", then do a wipe data/factory reset.

Finally ... "apply sdcard:update.zip"

.... it will take a few minutes and will reboot a couple of times...

enjoy your Android 2.2 Froyo FRF85B ... and please say a big thank you to me, kuntstubble

I'm sure people would if this was something new and revolutionary, however it isn't. At all. It's been known since May when FRF50 was leaked.

STFU. You show me the posts. There are people trying to find information like what I wrote. Maybe it is dotted about here and there. I see nothing as of yet, except people asking questions you smart arse.

So Rusty (Should you not have sheriffs badge tagged on the end of that?), kindly allow people to make their own minds up.

I don't think that your rude response was warranted. Rusty has a point, this information is all over the place, look in the all things root sub forum. As well as posts pointing to XDA.

No need to fly off the handle here.

I tried to make a concise how to, and the first post is slagged for no reason except that I ask for a thank you (jokingly).

The aim was to help people with my own personal findings. Also I found from many forums half botched info, etc. I wanted to present a simple start to finish for the EU owners, and I feel I did it. Please show me the other posts you compare mine to.

Hi Kuntstubble you shouldn't use bad words even in acronym form to put down people. That's not really nice Forum etiquette. If you don't like a post, please report the post so that a MOD can deal with the person in question. No need to add fuel to fire. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, even if you don't agree with it, but putting someone down is a different matter.

This is the main thread that a lot of people have been using for the Froyo updates: http://androidforums.com/nexus-one/83231-how-manually-update-nexus-one-android-2-2-frf85b-6-29-2010-a.html

Regardless, it was very thoughtful of you to create this thread. :)

Great. It is indeed extremely thoughtful of you to post this. It will help quite a few EU / UK users like me. I had another question related to unlocking. You saying that the bootloader needs to be unlocked for me to be able to upgrade to FRF85B using the manual procedure.

For bootloaders that are locked (no padlock sign. like the one I have), the OTA update is the only way to update to FRF85B, right ?

Thanks,
Amit

This didn't work for me. I was on ERF21B. Followed to the letter, and now all my phone will do is run part of the boot up animation, then freeze, then repeat. It does this for about 10 minutes, before completely resetting, and doing it all over again.

Any ideas how I can get myself out of this one? Only just bought the phone, and am panicking a bit now :'(

Well, you are the first to say that. Also if you followed it to the letter you would have said that the ROM download link is dead. So I can only assume you replaced that step by acquiring the ROM from either another location or, an entirely different ROM.

So you know, the MD5SUM of the ROM I used in my tutorial is:

94f103b38c726fe17a5ff8e7676a737b

Please start from scratch, and try once again. Also I would google for the MD5SUM to find a download link, and then double check the MD5SUM once you have downloaded a found file.

In the event you still have no joy, please PM me and I will try to help you. Do not panic, it is highly unlikely that you have bricked your phone. Far too many people start worrying. I have never bricked a phone every. Worst case scenario is we will dig in to RUU mode and do a full ROM there.
