Root I want to root. I have insurance from car toys.

Trust me...I haven't heard of anybody bricking...Also we have a very VERY supportive community here. I'm not too familiar with the 2.1 rooting process as have I done it long back when we were all running 2.0, but from what I hear the process has gotten easier. Also, rooting 2.0 seemed basically ABC to me as well, there were massive amounts of guides which had step by step instructions.

AND! You have a tool known as YouTube. People here basically step by step run you through how to root.

Theres a good one, but its going back to 2.0.1, which is a bit longer but at least you have a person guiding you step by step.

Now after you root, you can now download a 2.2 ROM. Feel free to PM me or post in this thread any questions that you have concerning after-root processes such as installing ROMs. I'm pretty sure that I can explain the 2.1 rooting process to you as well, just need to read up on a guide.

I am afraid of something going wrong and not going to 100 percent complete. I dont have a ton of faith in my computer and something like a force close could occur when i am in the process of flashing the rom.

it is really not that hard. i had the same fears but it is really one of the easiest things i have done. it is also just about impossible to brick your phone at this point (we now have back up files and programs that can save any bricked phone). if your not confident in your computer, use a friend's, it only takes around 10 minutes.

With rsdlite it's extremely difficult to brick. You have to actually try to brick it. In fact like they said above I've not even heard of anyone bricking...

That first boot up after rooting was a nail-biter for me too, trust me! But the freedom I now have to make backups, load ROMs and do all the great stuff I can is worth it! If I can do it, anyone (including you) can do it.

I to was nervous, I found a lot of help in the guides posted on here, watched some of the included videos and decided to go for it. The videos are a great help because you can pause them and complete the steps along with them. Once you do root you will see the time is well spent

Final question/concern:

In a video i watched, it said you might have to re-activate.

How do you do that....... I had Verizon do it for me when I bought my phone.

When I did it, I got really nervous when rsdlitesaid it didn't complete at 99%. It did that over and over again until I did some research and found out that it's extremely common - so much that it is normal.

As for your last question, to activate your phone you just follow the step-by-step instructions on the phone. Bottom line is you enter your Gmail address and password. Even that is optional. I'm tellng you... it's so easy a caveman can do it. U can't go wrong.

When it reboots it goes right into activation...

To clarify what the people below said, activation isn't really activation. When your phone reboots, it will go to Google activation. Remember when you first got the phone and the Verizon employee asked you to type in your email/password? Its the same thing. You just enter it and press next like 3 times.

I think thats the activation it requires you to do. I'm not sure because I didn't watch the video (1 bar 3G here). The other activation is merely calling *228 and pressing 1 when it asks you to.

TBH, I first rooted when I was severely buzzed. I personally wouldn't suggest rooting drunk, unless you need the "beer balls" to allow you to do it. I don't think it's as much an issue that you will mess up your phone because you are drunk, but I think it is more to the point that you will THINK you messed up your phone because you are drunk...

That's why folks like me lurk to the wee hours in the AM
I wouldn't recommend doing it drunk time for a PBR, for me BUT, if you do, read the stickies, watch the video, do what you need to do, but write down your steps!!!!
This way, if you fark it up, it's easier to see where you could have gone wrong. It's not that bad and once you are done you will find more complicated ways of breaking your phone

Worst scare I had was a couple of weeks ago when the phone wouldn't reboot into recovery after I farked up the ROM I just loaded. A little scary when you tanked the phone's OS but can't access any recovery files or get out of a boot loop, LOL.

Bottom line, battery pulls are your friend (not when rooting though )

That's what I was talking about above. I did two phones using the 2.01 SBC file and neither went all the way through to 100%. Then I read a way to just load a sbf file that only loads specovery on it. Then I got a rooted rom in sprecovery format, renamed it to update.zip, and loaded it with sprecovery. Saved a lot of time, and I've done three more this way. Worked every time. Even if you TRIED to fack it up, u still have rsdlite to unbrick the phone.

Edit: like I said, they likely wont go through to 100% and reboot like they're supposed tour you're using the complete 2.0.1 sbf method. Mine that I'm writing this with now didn't. If it doesn't go all the way through, let it sit there for about five minutes stuck at 99% then unplug it from the computer. It will boot back up.

Now, if ur using the sprecovery method above all three of mine went all the way through to 100%. Download the rom u want to use and make sure its compatible with using sprecovery. Rename it to update.zip and move it to the root of the sdcard. Then boot into recovery and load the update.zip file.

It's extremely difficult to fubar ur phone. If u think that happens u have 100's of ppl in here to help u.. this forum is by far has some of the best support.

Edit 2: **IMPORTANT** Remember I said it's extremely difficult to really foul up your phone? Well in another thread here we are discussing an issue that you want to avoid. The issue involves trying to flash with RSDLite while the battery is less than 50%. You run the risk of running the battery down while programming, and it won't allow the phone to recharge, leaving you in a weird predicament where you have an incomplete ROM installed that won't allow the phone to boot, and you are unable to charge your battery in your phone.

We haven't yet resolved his issue - I personally think that he'll have to obtain another battery and try reflashing, but we'll see...

We resolved his issue - it was definitely low battery. He replaced it and worked perfectly.

Don't root unless you have enough battery!

Eh... Don't let it discourage you. It's almost foolproof. Of course, it's up to you... It's your phone, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with staying stock. I just couldn't imagine being without overclocking and all the nice enhancements you get with customized roms.

Good luck either way you choose...
