EVO Wifi Hotspot for Gaming

Just thought I'd let everyone know, it DEFINITELY is possible. Before having an EVO I asked around all over and not many people would commit to saying it worked. I'm just here to say it works GREAT.

just got pinged at 95 ms and it works fine. Halo 3, Warcraft 3... they all work fantastic. Pretty much no different than my previous "high speed" cable connection.

I'm paying the $30 for the mobile hot spot and I have to say it's 100% worth it. I still only have 3g, no 4g yet... can only imagine how nice it will be then.

Any questions - shoot!

Good to know it works. When I first heard about the EVO, I knew this was going to be something that I had to test. Looking forward to ditching home phone, and home internet. Have you tried Netflix?

I just activated my hotspot feature tonite. I hope to cancel my broadband card and use this. Hopefully it's worth it.

What not way sounds interesting I have 4g in my area so I ma try to use it but the thing is the I use netflix a lot so I'm not sure

I live in a 4g area. It works great. Then again i do have the slow high speed for my home internet, so getting 4megs from this is great

Yes halo 3 over 3g with full green bars and I have been winning voice chat even sounds good. my Comcast connection was so bad and while this isn't as fast and text messages lag you, this is pretty great. People in games don't believe me LOL, especially when I win. Netflix works great but is NOT HD, but I deal lol. Not having Comcast saves me 70 each month

i use my evo wifi for work with vpn and WOW and as long as i have a decent signal on my 3g connection, i have no issues. i havent tried running ventrilo and 25 man raiding yet, but im sure it will work on 3g with a strong enough signal. If i plan to be using it for more than 15 min, i plug it in via the usb and charge off my laptop.

No offense, but your previous "high speed" was obviously rubbish.

As I mentioned it was Comcast. No doubt it was BEYOND rubbish. It made rubbish look like mana from the Gods, an Eagle's Egg, a stash of pirate gold. Honestly I would have paid $90 per month to get rid of Comcast, even if Comcast offered me free internet for life. I despise them and will not be moving into another residence where Comcast is the sole provider.

That said, I am receiving 3 mb/ s peaks with Sprint, and my Comcast connection peaked at 6 mb/s (SUPPOSEDLY, I NEVER saw it above 3 mb / s).

The drain is not as horrible as I expected. Not really any different than drain from streaming music that I could notice. I do keep mine plugged in.

I play warcraft 3 the frozen throne, with no problem at all, I bet you would be fine! =)











Also, Regarding heat, if anyone is curious there is a bit of heat, but it's not bad by any means - I keep it on the kick stand and it stays pretty cool. Also the charger still charges it even with the connection in use. I stream a 64k aac+ stream while gaming, and everything works great.

I also suspect they are giving the mobile hotspot users some special treatment when set into hotspot mode. I have been tethering for a long time, since I had the HTC Mogul and Sprint Touch. The best pings I could get on these devices was around 110 ms at best. On the EVO I am consistently getting around 95 ms, 110 at worst. The connection just feels more snappy, despite both being 3G. I could be wrong though, in the past it was via bluetooth PAN and now it is WIFI... not sure if speed is lost via bluetooth in the past, but just a theory since I notice it provisions itself each time you turn on wifi hotspot.

I'd have to say the biggest let down is that I don't have HD netflix. Hopefully I get 4g sometime soon and can watch more than standard def. That and receiving a call kills whatever you were doing. Text messages just pause the connection for an instant. Other than that, I give it 5 stars
